I only play female if it in some way alters the game experience, i.e. playing as fem-Shephard in ME and romancing that sweet Garrus booty, and having different dialogue and shit. For example players are going to be more kind to a female avatar than a male one. There will be losers who will give you free stuff just because your character is a girl. They will think you are one.
It's just more of an advantage to play as a female character.
