I feel like Hammer is the most used level editor of all time though by today's standards it's pretty much the worst thing to ever exist.

That said I probably have spent 2k hours of my life in hammer because back then there weren't any better alternatives and source/gldsrc had the best modding communities.

Goldsrc Hammer is and was always shit, thank god we got Sledge editor, that shit let me make a functioning cs map.

BTW does anyone know where I can get the .vmf files of the original Half Life maps? Planning to make a campaign but too lazy to decompile each .bsp file.

Hammer may be a piece of shit but it's a piece of shit that gets the job done. Workflow is atrocious if you want to add additional content to the map like materials or models. One can only hope Hammer for Source2 fixes this in the future.

It was even worse with the hl2 leak, we ended up compiling our own version later on just so it was more stable as we tried to pull more levels from the wc mappack to v37 engine leak hl2.
