They could release it as it is now, and honestly could have about a year and a half ago if they wanted to half arse it.

They don't give dates, the backers just wanted to have their internal schedule and they gave it.
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/schedule-report

These move a lot, this time by one or two weeks because of polish. Not sure why someone wrote an article about it and is now being copy pasted by everyone. They always put doing things well over anything else.
Kind of weird for people not even interested in the game to track its progress so much, I personally put 20 bucks in for both to-be games and check in once a couple of months.
>>
>>386455616
Nothing new, /v/ loves possible trainwrecks. Pushing dates is a big indication of some internal problems, so that translates as higher chance of incoming trainwrecks.

>>386456015
Not really in this case, if you see how they organise things it's pretty insane how well they keep track of everything. They decided to make full use of the procedural tech instead of going with canned landing zones so that pushed the original estimation of end of last year by a lot.

They're also kind of autistic about not faking things so they tend to build entire systems for handling certain tasks to build a more robust foundation to build upon. A lot of these haven't really been done before so there's a lot of R&Ding, and in programming these can take hours or months.

No, but it will push the trend that's already happening. Fargo talked about it in an interview - the well is basically tapped at this point. If it fails people will remember Star Citizen in much the same way they remember Atari's ET. It's a landmark moment, and an important cautionary tale, but poorly understood.

Bad scheduling is not a small matter, publisher pulled plugs all the time on any developer with bad scheduling. A good developer will even put their autism into release date calculations.
Fortunately crowd-funding is a good ground to milked out idiots with big wallets. Seriously, there should be some sort of law protecting consumer in this aspect.

The entire point from the start though, is that they had finally gotten enough funds to not deal with publishers and investors that they CAN do it the way they want instead of limiting yourself to all the canned and scripted shit we see in every game ever.

Yeah it can take forever or maybe not end up being released at all if you're overly dramatic and can't see how far they've already gotten from their behind the scenes stuff (literally thousands of hours of insight). But honestly who the fuck cares how long it takes when they get to build shit nobody else does? I most definitely prefer them experimenting instead of taking all the shortcuts every game ever does and get another shallow AAA experience like we've gotten a lot of recently.

I don't know, most aspects are already much deeper than other games.

It's funny because even the FPS module features ammo tracking and magazine repocketing, the last time I remember a game with that is Arma and SWAT4 and there's a trillion of those. I can come up with nearly endless of these examples in the current alpha, so your shitposting crystal ball means very little.

They went through a lot of trouble to have a unified third/first person rig. Every game ever (except I think Arma?) fakes this and has separate animations and meshes for third and first person. This had many many problems to solve but they have it running pretty much perfectly now. Stuff like needing to stabilise the head (because there would be head bob otherwise) using a combination of simulating the vestibulo-ocular reflex and some stabilising motion like birds have.

This allows them to have only one animation set (saving a lot of work), and what you see is always what's happening for real. Stuff like 'head glitching' is also not possible due to this and whenever you fire your gun, you truly shoot out of the gun instead of a cheaty method by raycasting from the centre of the screen (if someone has seen that Red Dead Redemption webm of shooting your own horse somehow).

This also let you shoot your gun while doing dance animations and it worked perfectly, including shooting other players in MP. They removed it as a game design decision though.

No one want's another Duke Nukem Forever scenario to happen again (aside from /v/). The longer the development period the higher the risk of unexpected short coming. What if they had messed up their backups? What it their core staff moved on to other studios? What if a publisher throws a couple hundred millions to outright buy the studio? What if that publisher is EA?

All this are very likely to happen since CIG is proven lousy at planning ahead.

I mean, I get it. I really do. That's pretty cool, but it doesn't contribute much to gameplay. This seems like a lot of time and effort for something that could've probably waited until after the singleplayer release.

There's a reason this kind of feature is glossed over in other games. It's not the meat and potatoes that really make the game. It seems like Roberts sits down with the department heads and says, "you know what would be cool? If this was like this or when you did this that happens! Yeah! That would be so awsome!"

Kind of wrong, because if you recall correctly it took Rockstar literally thousands of animations redone to include first-person.

This game is going to have an ungodly amount of animations for doing stuff in the universe and also interacting with your ship like punching buttons, repair, etc. so in the end it's still a lot less effort. The diegetic HUDs also kind of needed it.

Some guy on the Star Citizen subreddit who does business management consulting had the best take on it. The problem is that CIG is showing us their super-optimistic "if everything goes right" internal schedule that you use to keep people focused on tasks, rather than the normal projections you give to external people that are more pessimistic. You can't put leeway time in internal schedules because then the task grows to fill the time allotted and people either slack off or are stuck waiting for other people to get done with their part.
If they took their schedule and added a month or so of padding before showing it to people it'd probably work out better.
>>386456204

That reminded me of Pixar, they learned it the hard way in the beginning since they were always too perfectionist with the technical side of animation. From then on they focussed on making a resemblance of product first and added more of the original plan if they got extra time.
Pixar even said that none of their movies will ever be finished if given unlimited time, they always had to forcibly kicked it out of the door from their obsessive animators a month before screening.

I think Chris Robert could learn a thing or two from Pixar.

It’s not all been smooth sailing for Roberts and his team though, and since the game’s development began in 2012, Star Citizen has been played by “feature creep”. So, what began as a simple space combat simulator eventually morphed into something way more ambitious as new features where added

i believe the opposite happened. a huge amount of features were suggested amd they've had to retract most of what they promised. people thought this was going to be an mmo before they announced it would only be small persistent servers

I put in $500 and nothing has really changed in my life from that. If it comes out, cool, if not, no big deal. I never part with money unless I'm sure I can afford to never see anything from it. One of the big lessons my parents taught me about lending money to friends, because they may not repay you no matter what you do or threaten to do to them. Has kept me in the black through all the years.

That doesn't have any of the underlying system changes. If it's not going to acknowledge that rewriting Cryengine to support 64-bit positioning (which was necessary for 3.0) is a massive part of development, it's worthless. Same goes for the item 2.0 system where they changed how CryEngine handles component parts of objects entirely. It's a massive amount of work that isn't represented by that in the slightest, whereas they could just shit out ten planets with copy and pasted everythings and get 100% on that chart. Worthless.

I don't like his games. I don't like what he's done to two franchises I once liked very much. I will admit, though, for the audience he intends to draw, he definitely delivers. Hell, he delivers something, anything, at a budget and they're generally well received, even if I can't stand them personally. He's kept a studio of over a hundred people steadily employed for over a decade, and they've enjoyed great success and job security while making a strong name for themselves shipping five games of immense scale in thirteen years. We can meme on Todd all we like, but unlike Roberts, he's at least some variety of professional who doesn't squander his patrons' money.

/v/ enjoys watching ambitious projects fail for a multitude of reasons. I honestly don't mainly because it means that a large amount of resources, time, talent, and potential were wasted because of a spare few individuals that don't know how to manage a business properly; but it is kinda cathartic to see developers with delusions of grandeur get put in their place.

I don't really know, I feel like you're not giving deadlines enough credit, they can be a curse and a blessing depending on how time is spent and how talented the individuals are that are part of the project.

For something like this I'm not really informed enough to give an educated guess, but I don't think that having indefinite amounts of time to do something is always synonymous with the quality of it when it's released. I guess we'll just see though.

Considering this is the same ftroop that launched a public event, that got shut down with tools that are in the game(not a hack or cheat) and the whiny dads wanted to keep space trucking in solo so bad they cried to brabo and he undid the work that the players did in shutting down piblic event.....its aafe to assume play and game arent really words you can associate with korean grindfest.

That smart thing to do would have been release as an early access with a handful of planets to visit and whatnot for people to watch and be apart of the progress while bringing in new people to see as well. You could still leave in the microtransaction for ships to further fund the development of the game with free updates/expansions getting the scale bigger and bigger and not leave it as "it's coming out soon" while pushing it back, asking for more money, and wasting money on useless shit for their office like a sliding door.

There are too many whales and cocksuckers in the backer base to hold the fire to Chris's ass. They're more than content with waiting. I'm just glad I made money off of this while I had the chance and ended up with a free game code if things actually get around to a complete, playable state.

They're in cost sunk fallacy mode. They've invested too much they are more likely to donate MORE than to back out.

I will gladly wait for the game to delay til 2018. If they miss 2018, then Ill just ask for a refund.

>with 10 years and that much money invested everyone will pretend to like it, no one will admit if its bad because of how much they put into it

I wish I had saved the vid, but there was some Youtuber who was doing a blind playthrough of Mighty Number 9. As he was playing, he was saying "but he made it!", "but he made it!" over and over again. He was trying to convince himself the game was good. He couldn't understand how the "creator of mega man" had created the bad game he's playing. After an hour playthrough, he admitted that yes, it wasn't that good.

That's the sort of dissonance that exists for only donating a little bit. These Star Citizen guys may have invested upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. They're lost to the Cult now.

A lot of them are engineers of some kind, and pretty loaded. There's some autistic nerds like CWC who are just barely can function, but a lot of others have a lot of money and not much going on in their lives, so they can spend a lot on their childhood fantasies.

They'll never complete the first system. Part of the way through development in the next 5 years, they'll just keep hitting newer and newer facets of detail that they want to piddle around on and that the fans want.

As soon as ship damage is a real thing in the game, they'll drop everything and start making complex crafting and repair systems, then a complex mining system to support resource gathering for it. Talking creating individual parts for your shipt to replace them when they break. That kind of shit. They just keep spiraling off the main path of development into these tiny areas of detail to waste time on, and they'll keep doing it forever.

That's called Feature Creep in software development. It's an easy trap to get into. Modding often gets into that, since there's no deadline, they just keep adding features. Now that's kinda harmless stpuidity if it's just some free mod. But if it's a 300 million dollar game that's a bigger issue.

>>386486263

Some autists are parent living spazlords. Many others however, really are loaded with engineering degrees.

>Stretch goals is what ruins most of these crowd funded projects.

True. The project feels it has to justify the bigger budget, but then it ends up collapsing upon itself. Instead, stretch goals should just be simple to impliment, like a new area instead of totally new features.

For instance, Bloodstained had one stretch goal as "biggest Iga castle ever", but had a bunch of irrelelvant shit as other stretch goals. The stretch goals should instead have been room numbers for the game, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, etc, with the culmination being "biggest castle ever". Take that one stetch goal and stretch it out.

That isn't really true though. A lot of the big spender backers especially were people who were extremely well off. I remember one of them was an engineer that made over 200k a year.
