Something too unbalanced is ultimately more shallow in the long run. Something too balanced implies an inherent lack of variance due to the fact that it would be a practical impossibility to make something totally balanced while maintaining diverse playstyles.

Something somewhat balanced implies variance in quality and style of build such that it allows for things that would otherwise be seen as unsuitable for the style of play featured among the most common members of the game's roster; this also permits greater potential for upsets and greater longevity competitively with consideration to the fact that the more popular characters will be more heavily studied; a meta will form around them and therefore leave the weaker characters aside until someone inevitably decides to utilize the weaker characters in a way that the pre-established meta isn't used to; thereby shaking up the competitive status quo and increasing the game's competitive lifespan through abusing the lack of average player knowledge in order to implement new ways of looking at the game.
