Shantotto is "forced meme" personified. I played FFXI fucking forever. I've been playing it since I was 9 and playing it on my PS2 with a keyboard plugged in at launch. Did you watch any of the videos? It looks like that's gone in favour of having his Ex skill be a cancel for any move he's doing. You'll need to be good to use him well, but in a different way. Squall and Sephiroth are the timing based characters now.

I always took his quiet, low tone talking style to be him trying to keep strong emotions from taking over and concentrating his very being solely on his mission to be his way to keep fiendom and hatred for humanity away. However I discovered that many of his lines actually have exclamation points (and his emphasis is quite different in Japanese), that the voice actor/director just ignore. His only screaming line is when he's young and striking at Yunalesca and it sounds really, really bad, making me think they ignored non-whispering because the actor wasn't that good. It's all just a happy coincidence that gave birth to something even better than intended.

But I can really enjoy him, when I pretend it isn't the case.

Auron's probably one of if not the least favourite character design in FF, to me. It's just so tacky and unnecessarily busy, he looks like an original donut steel. The arm he keeps loosely hanging out from his coat which he bares only in combat is maximum groan zone.

I like his personality though, and his attitude towards Tidus.

This kind of reminds me of Barry from RE1. In REmake he isn't really that interesting. But in the original game he seems cooler even though the voice actor was obviously bad. The delivery of Barry's lines is legendary in that game. Not so much in REmake.

Because Jecht makes for a more interesting character for this type of game. It really isn't that complicated. Seymour would just play like a mage. The more interesting part of him was his transformation into a demon, aeon or whatever the fuck you want to call it.

Jecht was the main and perfect choice as antagonist for Tidus, especially considering how the game was going to play out. He doesn't show in person but he's a big factor in the background for Tidus and his story. It's the same reason why Golbez was chosen. In this game though they're not doing a strictly "heroes vs villains" style thing for deciding characters, which is why they just had the main protagonists off the bat.
