Everything else prior was robots or space ships or monsters or aliens

You're alright, anon.
>>386421950
Yes, it was. So many fucking underages in this thread it's unbelievable. I was there when it came out, "3D" wasn't even a term until the game became popular you fucks.
>>386423561
That's nothing close to 1st person.
Over the top view is neither 3rd, 2nd, 4th, 1st or any kind of person view.
>>386423561
first person refers to perspective, not the character being an actual person
>>386423561
>>386421950
No that was Marathon.
>>386423840
i dunno if he was being sarcastic or just retarded. But either way he meant the very first, person shooter. as in playing a dude shooting other dudes.
It was the first 3D game that did movement in a 3D space right, In many was it felt like the first truly 3D game
>>386421950
First and only, buddy.
>>386423840
It was the first game to give a true 6DoF rotating free moving camera, but it definitely was by no means the first game to contain polygons.
Doom is functionally 3-dimensional and came out in 1993.

No, but at the time, most industry professionals outside Nintendo were saying it was a huge blunder in the making. 3D was supposed to be a passing fad, not the future of gaming. Nintendo, however, managed to prove 3D gaming wasn't just some gimmick. You could make a real fun game with it.
The first 3D plataform game maybe
But is not the first 3D game faggot
>>386421950
Technically, no. But it is one of the only 3d games that mattered.
>Mario 64 and Quake came out in the same week
>>386424380
Doom isn't truly 3D because the Y-axis is always a constant.
>>386424440
Jumping Flash came out before it.
>>386421950
It wasn't the first, but it was the first that really solidified a lot core concepts in 3D gaming, world design and movement.
Additionally, it was helped by the N64's controller having an analogue stick that allowed for full control over Mario's movements, rather than dodgy digital control.
So, although it wasn't the first, it set the new bar on almost everything about the genre.

Not entirely true. While it couldn't do overlap over overhang, it could do different elevations.
It was Wolfenstein 3D that technically 2D because it was pure raycast.
>>386423561
Man reddit, you're hilarious
>>386425078
The elevations thing was just a viewpoint hack with additive maths, but was by no means a true Y-axis.
>>386425263
It was 2D data, but it did have that extra axis, even if it was a bit of a hack.
It wasn't true 3D, but I'd be hard pressed to call it completely 2D either.
