Higan through RetroArch I guess, since RA has an extensive shader system.

What do you mean? That's literally just upscaling the game to fill the monitor's resolution. Literally any emulator built does this. Press the maximize button of F for fullscreen.

Get retroarch. Download bsnes-mercury accuracy core. It's trivial to use shaders in that too. It also has vsync and harg gpu sync for close to 0 latency.

Nice job sucking all the color out of the image. CRT shaders are a joke compared to a respectable texture filter.
>>
>>386406010
Games were developed on PVMs and they were the highest quality displays we had at the time. That's the look to go for when given the choice.

Wanting to blur the dither or not is up to the consumer imo. PS1 relies on dithering in a lot of games but ever since I was a kid my dad bought a SCART cable and we never used the composite one that comes with it. Pure RGB goodness
>>
>>386406698
Sega consoles always had poor support for transparencies, you can see similar dithering in a lot of PSX games for added color.

That's like saying you should play all modern games with the textures removed because at some point in development they were just blank grey models.

Games were made for consumer sets, no one was ever expected to own or even know about professional monitors.

SNES looks amazing with RGB and a good CRT.
>>
>>386407535
You don't need a professional CRT though. Most of the differences comes from the cables you use and even modest CRTs look amazing if you use SCART or Component (hell, even SVideo makes a big difference) and those were easily available for anyone

As someone who owns a CRT and plays retro stuff on it, those shaders don't look anything like an actual CRT TV.
The real deal has a werid glow, I don't know how to explain it.
>>
>>386408785
you can turn them off
you can turn whatever simulated aspects of it you like on and off
actually you can adjust how much of it there is altogether, for every single aspect.

ghosting, distortion, saturation, scanlines (brightness, intensity), NTSC blending, sharpness, fucking whatever

it's all simulated accurately, the methods for which you can read up on in the paper he wrote to accompany it, and it can all be adjusted to taste
>>
>>386408626
Probably the closest thing I've seen to how CRTs look in person but it still isn't accurate or even nice to look at.

They're trying, but that's one of the hard things to do artificially.

It's never going to be 100% and there's always going to be value in having a CRT, but we're going to live in a world without them one day so getting as close as we possibly can is a big deal.
>>
You are all a bunch of retards with those shiny blurry shaders
Emulated scanlines are all you need, but the LCD techonology is still fucking shit so there will be ghosting and shit contrast, no matter what you do
Hopefully OLED fixed that shit

But there were a lot of different CRT types made. The rightmost image looks most like a shadow mask, which was among the cheapest type of CRT. That's not what the game looked like when I played it at all.

If anyone is in Massachusetts, they should probably go get this. I would myself but I'm working tomorrow.

Yes. They made games to look as good as they could and had to deal with the fact that that detail was going to get lost on the majority of the poor market because it couldn't be helped.

I bet you think 860x640 is the true gaming resolution.

I don't wanna even look for that shit
going down that whole hobbyist rabbit hole figuring out what model I want, or going down to the goodwill to find one that doesn't smell like dead grandpa and cumstains, or sift through ebay. My apartment is tiny, my office is shared, and my work computer is already taking up all the real estate I can reasonably afford.

>>386410314
this is actually close to what I wanna do but I can't even get higan emu to run at 240p, that's the most frustrating bit. Look at that shit, useless. I was attracted to it because it's actively being developed and it rolls a shit-tonne of emus into one, but goddamn.
What emu(s) do you use?
>>
>>386408626
I like the gtu shader better. None of that scanline shit or the crappy screendoor phosphor effect. Just the good stuff like blending and softening

>>
>>386403909
why do you kids smooth over retro games and make them look like shit?
>>
>>386410729
You need to make a custom modeline so the emu recognizes it as a valid resolution
You won't get 240p out of an LCD tho
>>
>>386409875
The "shitty" CRTs are the one's that make games look the most organic though, instead of a grid of pixels
>>
>>386410926
>custom modeline
I cannot for the life of me google how to do this for higan emu
I might be retarded. Have you got a link or something that could start me off in the right direction
