Why do they persist with the ugly, tired retro-futurism bullshit of the Fallout series? Why can't a realistic post-apocalyptic game be made?
Because it's POST APOCALYPSE.

Pic is about >POST APOCALYPSE
I don't see any human being they are probably all dead.

because that would be boring, the environments would look like any destroyed city in modern military shooter anyway

Perhaps you're looking for neo-apocalypse, or after life has recovered from such an event?

"Post-apocalyptic" can be variable based entirely on what kind of apocalypse you're referring to. They're all valid.

>why isn't the post apocalypse a gleaming, futuristic city

What is populating it then?
On the original topic, make the apocalypse not a bleak "we nuked ourselves" thing, make it a "well, reality suddenly fucked itself, everything you knew about the old world? Forget it, 2+2=fish here", there you can have surreal landscapes and can go nuts with the artistic direction (hello worlds.com)

The image is promotional art from Fallout 4 showing the retro futurism, obviously I wouldn't think a post apocalypse would look like that

Kingdom Hearts is sorta like that in a stupid way. Everything is as it was in the worlds because of how recent the "calamity" started happening. Neon Genesis also does this, but that's not a game. I suppose Nier Automata is like that even though it's not the most attractive looking game and things are overgrown.

The whole point of post-apocalypse settings is that they give storytellers a blank slate to do whatever they want with the world.
As here:

Your definition of "realistic post-apocalypse" what be entirely up to you to decide.

I mean one set in our timeline, whereas the Fallout timeline diverges from our own, hence the lasers because of nuclear power being used more, and big computers because micro processors weren't invented
