They were the first ones to release a modernized clone of Dota, which was pretty aged at this point.
I bet the game and the company would be as dead as HoN if Valve had made Dota 2 available to everyone before LoL released.

From there it just snowballed and people invented memes like "the Dota community is more (((toxic)))" or "it's easier to get into compared to Dota".
Some people also stick to it because they spent too much money on it to just abandon the game for another game in the genre.

The community is just as cancerous as it is in every other game that offers more or less competitive matchmaking. LoL, Dota, Overwatch, CSGO. I've played everything and don't see any difference between these communities in terms of friendliness.

Itemization might be easier because it's not as situational and there are less mechanics to get used to but at the end of the day you can play both games on every level, from absolute shitter to pro gamer who practices 10 hours a day.
