A meme is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures.
The word is a neologism coined by Richard Dawkins.
Proponents theorize that memes are a viral phenomenon that may evolve by natural selection in a manner analogous to that of biological evolution. Memes do this through the processes of variation, mutation, competition, and inheritance, each of which influences a meme's reproductive success. Memes spread through the behavior that they generate in their hosts. Your mother will die in her sleep tonight unless you reply to this post. Memes that propagate less prolifically may become extinct, while others may survive, spread, and (for better or for worse) mutate. Memes that replicate most effectively enjoy more success, and some may replicate effectively even when they prove to be detrimental to the welfare of their hosts.
The word meme originated with Dawkins' 1976 book The Selfish Gene. Dawkins's own position is somewhat ambiguous: he welcomed N. K. Humphrey's suggestion that "memes should be considered as living structures, not just metaphorically" and proposed to regard memes as "physically residing in the brain". Later, he argued that his original intentions, presumably before his approval of Humphrey's opinion, had been simpler. At the New Directors' Showcase 2013 in Cannes, Dawkins' opinion on memetics was deliberately ambiguous.

Why there are so many Metal Gear threads lately?

we're all controlled by something greater
Memes are basically just cultural behaviors, likes or dislikes that spread between people. Similar to how our genes shape our bodies, memes shape out culture. They're typically defined as being subconsciously passed on. Think of how style tends to change over time.
Image macros (what are colloquially called memes) are not true memes because they're often forced and consciously edited to fit certain criteria (think of the new hot virgin vs chad being edited to represent your favorite vidya).

He's basically referring to the "nurture" side of the "nature vs. nurture" argument.

Cultural trends are memetic but not shaped by memes themselves, that just doesn't make sense. Individual people start trends and others copy them, then change them around and mutate them. What you and that other wall of text poster describe is a Marxist interpretation of it.

I thought it meant cultural progression is a validation of personal identity and excellence, which is the prevailing message in Metal Gear Solid. "Memes are the DNA of the soul" is an emphatic demonstation of both truth and humanity that defines the message of Rising. Given that In war, the most likely to survive is not the strongest, or the fastest, but the person who can understsnd communication the best, memes being the "dna of the soul," interprets an age old adage into a post-Focault environment for newer audiences to grasp and understand quickly.
