What's the secret to it's success?

fun
headbang emote
fun quests
plenty of skills, everyone is bound to find one they enjoy actively doing
decent community
decent f2p content
browser based

didnt take itself too serious

huge world with much content
Simply, simplicity
Timing. It popped up during the golden age of the internet, when connection speeds started becoming tolerable. Also it did it's job properly.

Regular updates
>>386359539
being british
>>386359858
Pretty much all of this. I'd emphasize the quests since it was a big deal for an MMO to have quests with actual story and depth that wasn't just "collect X item" or "kill X number of monsters"

>updates
if only they had been good, though
the new quests and events were cool, but nothing else
>>386359539
bandwagon. Nothing more
Free to play and ran in a browser so technophobe parents were okay with it as oppose to a game that you download. Thanks for making me miss out on the golden age of WoW, mother.
simple if you want it to be
idle game if you want it to be
complex if you want it to be

OSRS is fine with the updates.
Haven't kept up for a few months but the updates made it better.
OSRS > RS2HD > 2007-era RS > RS3 > RSC >>>> EoC and everything after EoC
Fish lvls?

nice

They kept updating the new game for what their newer customers want, and when the older customer base wanted the old game, they released that too instead of saying "You don't want that". Any updates to the 2007 version are done purely by community vote so if it "gets ruined" they have only themselves to blame.

the pride event sure was wanted by the majority of the players
I loved playing it back in 06-07 and I really wish I could experience it all again. OSRS brought a ray of hope for me and I went back, the community is terrible now, I played for a few hours and only about 5 people spoke out of the hundreds I seen.
Honestly chat groups like team speak and discord were the worst things ever invented, they completely ruined the need to have to talk to people in games like RS.
That and OSRS is fucked now with the Liberal progressive shit pushed into a fantasy game.

>free browser game, no installation needed
>similarites with UO
>actually interesting quests
>you will never comfortably collect items needed for a quest before setting out for adventure ever again
>>386361176
>they will never do a black lives matter event where one of the fun weapons is a cap gun and the 'helmet' is a doorag+bandana
To be honest Jagex has always been fucking stupid. Just look at Runescape itself, the actual fucking game. They ruined it in 2013 and kept making it worse. OSRS was literally them rolling everything back and undo-ing their mistakes. They are almost sony-tier when it comes to bad decisions for playerbase.
>>386361176
>How can we make an event for gay pride if the word gay is banned?
>the devs actually try to defend this
holy shit im dying
>>386359539
Theres enough free to play content that you don't feel cucked without a membership. then after playing for so long you probably say fuck it and get a membership anyways
>>386362342
>you'll never experience the best part of your life ever again
>>386361176
>osrs is ruined because of one tiny event that was completely forgettable

it only shows that they're capable of doing
who knows what the future holds?
