that's your general run down of mods to play after a vanilla run of SOC and COP, the list is a bit dated, but it's the range of fun stuff, OGSE was buggy in it's day, dunno about it now. Stalkersoup is probably the most fleshed experience aside from call of chernobyl, but it's by far the messiest and crash prone mod. Save call of chernobyl (CoC) for last because it's practically endgame of modding, as it's freeroam faction roleplaying.

Not necessarily. A lot of fun in Staker does come from it's oppressive atmosphere, and of course playing the game on lower difficulty than necessary is going to not benefit that tone - the player should never really feel completely in power and safe in Stalker.

That said, the "only play on Master" meme comes from several annoying MYTHS about the game and about how it plays.
I'd recommend starting with Master, but adjusting it to whatever feels challenging, but does not feel frustrating enough to make you feel like not pushing on. There is no inherent reason to play on Master other than the fact that you should never feel entirely safe in this game.

Oh boy... Well, I could on for HOURS about how I feel about that damn thing. Unlike most people who will just say "it's shit" because they never played it but heard other people claiming it's shit and simple negative opinions are always the coolest and most worth parroting:
I played the damn thing, and I don't think I've ever felt so torn, dissappointed, frustrated and conflicted with any other mod in my life.

It's... fuck I don't even know where to start.
So the environments - outdoor areas in particular - are the absolute best the damn series has ever seen. There is a few locations, particularly later on, that are clearly unfinished, but then again so was the original, so you can hardly hold that against the developer. Most of them are absolutely amazing and several times better than the original versions.
The visuals and ambience, together with a handful of adjusted mechanics are also amazing.
At times, Lost Alpha can be the most immersive, most beautiful, most haunting the series has ever been.

But then, the shit starts to surface. The fucking story... Oh the fucking story. It's not even that much that they altered the main story line (it's just as fucking dumb as the original was), but it's the INSANELY POOR NARRATIVE that just rapes the game. Hours of unskippable, poorly animated, poorly voiceacted cutscenes smashing the dumbest plot elements in your face. The fucking rape of the atmosphere of the labs. The fucking 20 minute spoof of HL1's opening! Jesus FUCK what were they thinking?!

And then you start running in just profound weird bugs, lacks of balance, changes that are utterly unecessary and out of place... Why is the hunger and thirst balanced so that you can go to bed with full health, full thirst and full hunger meters and DIE IN YOUR SLEEP OF HUNGER if you oversleep?!
Why do controlers have unlimited range and don't need any line of sight what-so-ever to constantly introduce the head-sway effect?

There's the standard (SoC) part, but there's also some bullshit part with fire anomolies and snorks out the ass and that one chamber with controllers filled with gas or whatever? Where is it from, CS? I reckon all the "old" (SoC) maps are taken from CS too? They look different to what I'm used to.

Anons, I haven't played Stalker or looked at Stalker threads since a good 5 years ago. I played through SoC vanilla and with AMK1.4 (I think I also tried out ZOA briefly), and I also played most of CoP vanilla. Never got far into CS. Out of them all, my favorite game was SoC with AMK. Lately I've been thinking of getting back into Stalkan, what are the hip new mods? Looks like Gunslinger still isn't out.

the starter pack works fine enough for that, it's in the stalker gen repo. still theres a lot of other mods to play before that, it's best to check their updated flowchart of modding, because all of mine are old as shit, and I've played every stalker mod in existence, english and cyka blyat flavors.

I always recruit a squad from my faction and try to finish missions while keeping them alive, redistributing weapons, etc. Babysitting them can be frustrating at times but it makes long journeys interesting.

it's a fun game somewhat, it's just not a great stalker game. it's worth at least one play through if you don't want to do any mod runs of it, no one's going to judge you for it - as anyone would tell you it's easily the weakest stalker game.

The game takes a while to get going; the swamp is basically a longer version of SoC's garage mission where you're stuck with really shitty gear. And towards the end it becomes too linear with a crappy ending.
Also, some of the new main features, such as the faction war and emissions are really unpolished.
It has it's moments though. The new areas are pretty interesting and it's also the only game that lets you properly join a faction.

It adopts the CoP model to a point. Artifacts spawn in anomaly fields that are marked on your map from the start of the game (personally I preferred to filter them off, because seeing where the artifact-spawning fields are by just checking them map removes ANY sense of exploration what so ever.

During Blowouts, artifacts have a chance of spawning in a marked predetermined anomaly field, and if you have the right detector, you can "summon" them.

It's honestly not a good system, in fact arguably the weakest element of CoC, because it turns artifact hunting into somewhat of a chore "do regular rounds to check map-marked locations for lumps of cash".
I really think it's the ONE element that needs to be overhauled.

There are some instances where artifacts can spawn outside of the designed artifact-spawning fields. I have NEVER FIGURED OUT the logic though. I had found three or four artifacts just completely randomly (like on the roof of Rostok factory, or in the middle of Dark Valley Bandit hub) by completely randomly checking surroundings through a detector. I don't know if these are some easter eggs, if they respawn, if they are randomized or what is the logic there. But it's extremely uncommon.

No, you can run into anomalies outside of those fields, but the anomalies outside of these fields don't generate artifacts.
The anomaly fields that generate them are just these really dense clusters of anomalies that you have to navigate to get to close to their center to "summon" the artifact, which can be tedious. Especially since it can bug out and the artifact refuses to make itself visible. I suspect that is related to how even when invisible, the artifact is still a physical object and it can get stuck or caught in an endless loop...

You also NEED detectors to summon the artifact. You can actually see the artifacts in the cluster sometimes by naked eye, but without the detector, it won't appear and become collectable, no matter how close you get to it. It's a bit weird system, especially because it's kind of a pain in the ass to get a detector. You can buy them from scientists in Yantar and Jupiter, or hope for a random drop or spawn.

But really, my issue is that once you know where the artifact-birthing clusters are, it boils down to checking them regularly, and there is virtually no actual joy in finding them accidentally or unexpectedly. It makes artifact collection rather dull and mechanical.
Really: it's the ONE thing that I don't like about the mod.

Last small note, if you intend to play it any time soon: even if you get an artifact early in game, don't expect to find much. At the begining of the game, all fields are empty, and it takes at least the first blowout for the very first ones to even spawn. It can take four or five blowouts for them to be relatively common-place in the world

Thanks. One last thing: would you say the overall feel of CoC is more like SoC or CoP. By which I mean, in SoC it always seemed like there were a lot more hostile NPCs roaming about, while in CoP much of the game felt like a safe zone aside from the occasional pack of dogs. I prefer SoC in this sense, and I feel like this gigantic map would be pretty boring if nearly everyone greets me with howdy ho.

You play SoC and then CoP vanilla, if you like them mod them. I like AMK for SoC and Misery for CoP. Misery is pretty miserable, though.
