cultists or broken lords

i played broken lords first time. as you begin to steamroll people you can make your cities fucking huge just by buying your population with dust and expanding. and with cultists your city can be a glorious sanctuary in a sea of heathens (they only have 1 city)

Cities grow with dust? But growth increases dust production too... I see how that might make it easy. I'll try Cultists, haven't played them yet.

Broken Lords or Wild Walkers. Wild Walkers are the most normal race with barely any gimmicks, good economy, influence and units. Broken Lords start slow but become overpowered in the end game. Their problem is that you don't need food, and by learning to play this game via playing them you might develop some habits that could ruin other playthroughs. Vaulters are also be good to start with.

It is not that I hate it, but it all is literally the opposite of exciting.

Man, GalCiv2 had some great music design, changed according to what was happening.
If you were losing the war it became opressive and dark, etc.

GalCiv2 is in general an outstanding game that just happens to be on the bland side. Expansions also neutered the AI for some reason and you need to mod it back in. I really need to check out GalCiv3 as well, but fuck them for selling races as DLC when they were in previous games.

GalCiv3 is just kinda mediocre. I haven't played GalCiv2 in over a decade so I can't say whether it improved on that or not, but compared to every other space 4x out there now I found GalCiv3 to be really bland and forgettable, although the AI was better than most of the other games which was nice.

I've only played Forgotten so far, strength is spying but weakness is they gain zero science resource, and have to buy tech with gold or steal it by spying. Pretty interesting.

Forgotten are weak, possibly the weakest faction, despite some good faction/faction quest reward techs. If you want espionage, just play another faction and snatch up as many Forgotten heroes from the market as you can.

Allayi are weird, I get the feeling they're supposed to go tall instead of wide, but the new resource (Pearls) you need for their burrows always gimp my city expanding efforts, unless I'm playing on some of the largest maps and stealing all the Pearls on it. I found their units pretty strong though.

The Morgawr kinda function as you'd imagine, weak on land without minor faction units and a menace on the seas.
