Okay, here me out.
To start, hero units? Gone, screw them. The central characters will instead be leaders who direct the units from off map.
And I know what you're thinking:

That's simple, friend. Generic units, just like the enemy uses. Except now they can be created at certain facilities. Or hired, if flavor is that important to you.
But to do this you will need a way of generating money in mission, so maps will need a series of neutral territories that can be captured in order to generate revenue.
I think the series could also use a bit of a facelift in terms of setting. Medieval fantasy is fine at all, but something more modern, maybe slightly futuristic will give us some wiggle room to create new things.
Now, I realize a slugfest between generic units with all the same stats would be kind of boring, so let's take our off-map leaders and tweak them a bit. Now they have preferences, certain units of theirs will be stronger or weaker depending on those preferences. We could also give them other kinds of specialties, like giving units an offense boost if they attack from a certain kind of terrain. To help keep some of the fantasy aspect around, we'll also give the leaders magic they can use to swing the battle. The MP for these will have to be generated through combat just to make things more fair.
Oh, and ranged units can't move and attack in the same turn. Because reasons.

Awakening is an easy beginner game but is very uninteresting for someone familiar to the genre.
Echoes is a NES game with updated graphics, some love it some hate it. Most like it but it's a bad beginning title due to the odd, one off mechanics.
Birthright is the same description as Awakening.
Conquest is somewhat harder but has an offensively bad story. Bad first game, get into it after you know you like the series.
Special Edition is all 3 Fates games. Revelations is bad, don't play.
Path of Radiance is a Gamecube game.

Senran Kagura got a spot in one of the Japanese Switch Directs, but America cut it out. Even Fire Emblem gets shit on by NOA. Tharja's ass covered by a towel, #FE had the removal "vagina bones" and the bikini modeling scene got changed completely, and in Fates all risque accessories barring the bath towel got cut along with the petting minigame. I'm sure the Treehouse localization team would have censored some of the default outfits too if they weren't nailed down on the model.

It's not fair. Fire Emblem is nice and all, but excessive RNG kills my enjoyment of strategy games.

Focus more on marriage and inter-personal relationships between units.
Providing units with a sense of personality as well as emotional ties to others create a sense of caring for each individual unit which raises the stakes of each level played.

It has limited uses per map/dungeon obviously, but you might want to try it if you like SRPGs but not RNG

The only difficult map is chapter 14 and that's really only hard if you want the Gaiden chapter. Other chapters only get difficult if the same turn reinforcement bullshit fuck you over but since it's hard mode you already know it before hand unless you go to a different route.

Chapter 7 is harder than 14 though.
By then Lot, Wade, and Bors will all be shit, so your only units that can really defend against the wyverns are Lance, Marcus, Alan, and Dieck (who is at constant WTD so will struggle) and unless you get lucky with speed growths then none of them will really double.
Between those four you have to get Roy to wherever Zealot's A.I. has taken him, and cover your squishier units like Lugh, healers, or archers.

Compared to 14 where you have plenty of time before Maggie and Rose appear, and they can be staved off completely by just dumping Rutger or Fir in their path, even at a low level.
You have ample torches by then, so FoW isn't a huge issue, especially as there's only one more FoW chapter after that.
Also you now have up to 3 fliers that should be able to survive a go around with the wyverns and bait them away from whatever mage you're using to kill the mamkutes. Along with Dieck who should now be able to use axes and laugh off the wyverns

Chapter 7 becomes difficult if you play too slow and careful and don't recruit the Zelot, Trec and Noah in time. If you just divide your units with the strongest on the left to protect Roy so he or Noah can get to Zelot. If you use them and don't become so nervous over giving them exp they can do work especially Zelot. The right side doesn't have any dangerous units besides the wyvern rider but Lugh or any of the archers can kill him quickly after baiting him out. And since this is hard mode you know where the same-turn reinforcements come from.
