It's mainly because of how relatively unique it is. It's an anime-looking game made by one of the Silent Hill/Siren creators, it isn't blatant weebshit or relies heavily on otaku pandering to carry itself, and because of the gimmick of shifting gravity to fly through the air in a french-inspired backdrop, with an interesting story and fun characters

I think it'd be neat if the next game was about Kat being transported to another, noir-ish world when she descended down into the darkness to contain, and the game would be about her solving the initial cause of the darkness spreading before she comes back to Hekseville, tying into the epilogue. of the 2nd.

One location type I still wanted to see in GR is a city with districts that had their own gravity, so an upside down district hovering above the other, stuff like that.

GR2 is far and away my GOTY but this is such fucking bullshit. The controls/camera are the games' weakest point, so much so that so many people play the game shifting as little as possible.

Now this is definitely a case of needing to git gud, and is a great benchmark to use to see just how fucking casual so many people are, but there's nothing intuitive about the mechanics.

I seriously don't know how people say 2 was a let-down in comparison to 1. Lunar and Jupiter style are awesome, the graphics are really fucking nice, music's amazing, the story is well-done and emotional at times, and it just ties 1 and 2 together in a great way.

I don't feel like it renders the first game moot, because that wouldn't support how the game interprets the story in a narrative, thematic, or meta sense.

Bit's role as an engineer being clarified in the DLC kind of shows us how time and memories work in the game's world.

Essentially the first game's events do happen, but he stores them in another folder. Evidence of residual memories are still there because Kat and Raven reference it on their way up the pillar, Zaza remembering Sachya and Raven crying at it, etc

So I guess the first game's events DO matter but some parts are now hazy to everyone because of the timeline switch

Is the remaster the best way to play GR1? I don't really like buying digital but I might have to after looking at the prices for physical copies. Fucking hell.

She doesn't have "no backstory". Her memories existing and being overwritten when the world reset are all a part of that backstory.

It's worth pointing out that the creators like Bit aren't infallible and all-knowing. Bit himself screwed up when trying to contain the light and darkness, and he also said Sachya needed to never have existed in order for the world to heal - yet she's still there afterwards, running around with Zaza.

Besides, she's obviously still the same person she was before. Her personality is no different and she seems to still remember Kat and various current events. Her past memories might be gone, but their effects (shaping her into the person that she became) are still present. She's still Raven.

Right? I get it, rich people suck. Can we please focused on characters the average player won't necessarily agree with but still have nuance? The military pack missions were easily among the best in the first game. I loved how the Jellyfish Unit, while total zealots, were still good people who wanted to help people. Hell they even prioritize rescuing civilians over direct engaging the Nevi.

Meanwhile, the Council and the Garrison were boring, generically evil fuckstains who were so insignificant that they didn't even have any named characters among them. They pretty much only exist to be BTFO by the Nevi half way through the game, which is admittedly quite satisfying, because even the Nevi are somewhat interesting in that "The fuck ARE you?" sort of way.

I feel a bit cheated in that regard. Sure, dude was a jackbooted asshole, but he apparently did so because he had Kat's message ball the whole time, and was trying to defend Hekesville from the impending darkness. Again though, I feel a Yunica DLC in the same midquel vain of Raven's Choice would be a good way to clear some of this stuff up.

Seriously, the fuck are these things? Why do they randomly attack people? What's the implied connection between them and the Guardians? Are they products of the darkness? Why are there white ones on Eto? Why was that one Nevi trying to protect Echo? What's that device Syd uses to control them? Why did they possess Neu Hiraleon's gravity engine? Why were they in that weird dream world Kat and Raven went to? Why do these creatures make less sense than metroids? Goddamn.

I really loved GR2 right up until the ending. I could handle the tedious mining, the boring rift planes, the anticlimaxes, and even the fucking hour long tutorial - but the way it just rushed through Eto, outright refused to explain itself while throwing more bullshit at you, and then deliberately tried to wring emotion outta you with repeated hamfisted bullcrap soured it for me massively.

I just don't understand what the fuck Toyama was thinking, especially since this was apparently meant to be the end of Kat's story.

Uh, bullshit. There are a ton of plot threads left to explore.

The issues inherent in the two cities merging, Cai being on the loose, the fallout of Eto's discovery and subsequent upheaval, the implication that Lisa will run for mayor, whatever the hell was going on in the dream world and who that palate swapped Kat was, the approaching darkness and whether Kat actually stopped it or not, the connection between the Nevi and the Guardians, why the fuck Dusty took his fat sweet time appear to Kat in the first place, Bit's claim that Kat and Raven are two halves of the same person... It's absurd how much shit is left to deal with. There's almost enough material left for two games.

Toyama planned GR2 years ago and its always been the conclusion of her story.
Most of those plot threads aren't being left open for a sequel, they're left open because Toyama decided to not bother closing them after creating them for no reason.

Hence why I think most of his choices regarding the plot of the last third of the game are fucking baffling.

I thought the simplest explanation for the Nevi is that they're inherently harmless, but the demon personifying the darkness consuming the pillar corrupts them, so they get more volatile the further down you go.

They can still be peaceful, like the one that Echo befriended, but they react to strong negative emotions.
