Nope. Take a look at any museum with plate armor. It makes absolutely no sense to have HUEG shoulder plates. It's basically boobplate for men. Unpractical, but enhancing an attractive feature.

Yes, pauldrons really existed. While some did nothing more than protect the shoulder other were supposed to also protect the neck by having protrusions similar to, though not nearly as large as, the ones in the western image in the OP.
