I think it's a case of paralleling Morrowind - Oblivion - Skyrim with P3 - 4 - 5, in that 3 perfected the formula, 4 carried on with it simplifying it which made it more of a success and after 4 became a cult classic, everyone went on to play 5 which is now the mainstream hit
