Replaying the Genesis games back to back, I forgot how much the unique stage gimmicks add to 3&K. The first two game had some gimmicks but not nearly as many. Each 3&K stage has several, most of which are creative and well implemented. They really add a lot of flavor to the game that the previous two were lacking. Don't get me wrong, 1 and 2 are still fantastic, but they are also much more straightforward.

I absolutely rate S3&K as the ultimate platformer and I put it up there as one of my favourite games of all time.

I remember getting Sonic 3 for my birthday when it first came out and completing it in a day. There was something so awesome about the game but when I heard that there was a piggyback on Sonic and Knuckles, I was blown away and thought all games would do this in the future.

Because we couldn't afford games I used to hire Sonic and Knuckles regularly and complete it over the weekend, only to have it return.

Eventually I managed to get a copy of it, and got hyper-everything.

I still run through it at least once a year.

Nah Ice Cap is fun to play as well. Honestly I think I prefer Hydrocity's music but still like Ice Cap better overall. Sonic 3 levels are great in general though except Carnival Night.

I've never played that much classic Sonic.
I beat Sonic the Hedgehog last year. It took me a while because I kept starting from the beginning when I got a game over.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 gave me a lot more trouble because even though the Continue system made it easier to keep going, Metropolis Zone and Wing Fortress Zone kept me back and I stopped playing for a while.
Then I played through Sonic 3 and beat that pretty easily but it had an in-game save system so I felt like I cheated and didn't really beat the game officially. I'm going to come back to it and replay it without a save file so I can't continue and can beat it properly.
And today I came back to playing Sonic 2 and worked out how to get past Wing Fortress Zone easily (I still fucking hate that level) and got Metal Sonic's pattern down pat before I lost all my continues on the Eggman robot. I just need to play through the game from the start one more time and I know I'll be able to beat it.
I can't wait for Mania.

My Dad got me Sonic 3 from the local Sears of all places but I only got a few games a year because shit was expensive so when & Knuckles came out I had to frequently rent it from Blockbuster. I think I ended getting my own copy a year or so later. 3&K is my favorite 2D platformer hands down.

At first I was kind of bummed because they don't sound like the same style as the Genesis games, but the more I started thinking about Mania as a lost Saturn Sonic game the more I liked the change up and felt it made sense. I actually had Sonic and knuckles first, thinking IT was Sonic 3..I unfortunately also had a malfunctioning control port on my genesis. When I played, the character on screen wouldn't respond to my input unless I applied pressure to the connection. My parents thought it was the game itself so they returned it. No copies were left so I got Jurassic Park rampage edition instead. It acted up too and my mom threw down my genesis in anger. That Christmas, they got me a new one bundled with Sonic 3 and Sub Terrainia. I was lucky in that a family friend owner S&K so I'd borrow that and everything just worked out.

I honestly love Sandpolis act 1. I hated it when I was younger and even when I was older I had a hard time getting through the stage without getting a time out, but now a days I love how the level slowly shows you mechanics and then keeps stacking them on top of eachother until your hectically scurrying to the end of the stage. Like, push a block and running out of a room that's filling with sand while ghosts start to circle you and slowly get stronger just make the level tense and fun.

I wouldn't mind if Mania got a sequel that strayed away from bringing back the classic stages and instead revised modern stages in the classic world. Along with it could come modern Sonic characters brought into the classic world like Blaze and Shadow. Making them replace Tails and Knuckles would be a bit risky, so they could just be an optional choice along with tails and Knuckles. And then they could add a character select for variable character combos like what some anon wanted. That would be their way of bringing back another modern Sonic game element.

Maybe it's because I've played that game to death compared to 3&K but I replayed Sonic 3 Complete recently and fucked up 5 whole special stages and didn't get all the Emeralds until Carnival Night.

No it isn't, it deserves everything it gets

The story is terrible, it is buggy, the gameplay is boring and poorly thought out, it is grindy, most of the equip items for Sonic are broken, you fall out of bounds or just die in scripted sections often, silver is boring as fuck to play even moreso than the others, the bosses range from trivial to cheap, it ruined the backstory of certain already existing characters, the 'secondary' characters were basically walking gimmicks and not fun to play (why the fuck does tails have a ring bomb?' and the 'finale' was incredibly tedious and frustrating, one of the worst parts of the game.

Alright so from the information I saw posted on these threads it seems that the Playstation PSN releases are always at midnight for games that are pre-loaded, that means that we're getting Mania right at midnight in that platform.

However, Steam unlocks its releases in the afternoon of EST. According to Asian posters (pic related), this checks out since it's listed on the 16th there.

Therefore, if you pre-ordered on PC you'll get the game around 12 hours later than Playstation users and will also be spoiled to shit if you browse these threads during launch.

Sure there's monitors, all Sonic games have them, but there's no lives. So other than rings, shields and the Combine Ring there's not much to offer. If you aren't getting the Chaos Rings there's actually no point to exploring these huge as fuck levels

Sonic CD offered Robot Generators in the past and 3&K offered Special Stages. It's a lot more incentive than the Bonus Stages in Chaotix which eat your ring count just for the possibility of more rings. The design is inherently contradictory

I never found the Shooting sections boring, I actually had more fun with them than the Speed Sections. Sure there some sections in those games that are bad, but so do the special stages.

I honestly don't get why people hate the Mech and Emerald Hunting stages as much as they do. Even as someone who played these games almost decade after they came out, I didn't hate them nearly as much as people said I would. Sure they're not perfect but a lot of Sonic games aren't perfect. Even my favorite Sonic game, Sonic 2 has a crap-ton of issues.
