Yes and no.

>Enemies are more varied, the controls are better, you have two new modes with unique moves, and spamming the gravity kick isn't the only viable strategy anymore - the game actually encourages mixing things up a bit.
>The side-missions are also more varied and have mini-stories attached to them, there's new types of challenges, the new city is a lot of fun to explore, and the camera is really fun to fuck around with and adds tangible collectibles to hunt for around the maps to snap photos of them.

But, like I said, the ending is a bit of a wet fart. There's a new mining side-activity you have to do at certain points that kinda sucks, and the alternate dimensions aren't nearly as good as the ones in the first game (bar one)

I really enjoyed it overall but if you weren't at least charmed by the first I'd wait for a sale.

Horrizon Zero Dawn was 30fps garbage and the combat was disgusting.

Nier Automata made me feel nothing emotionally, besides some pretty average Platinum gameplay, nice music and few bells and whistles it did nothing new or innovative to garner such praise. Also the PC port was a fucking abomination and I count that as a mark against the game.

P5 had a really nice aesthetic and the music was arguable some of the best in the series. That said, while I liked P4 a lot this game felt was to derivative, almost P3 to P4 derivative. I got bored fast, really bored and that's not what I want out of a 100+ hours JRPG.

I never encountered a situation like those, a majority of the time I tried to jump like that I got punished, but that's not really what Im talking about. Outside of the weapons, you have the abilities that all can be during combat depending on your surroundings or the items. Raming enemies with boxes, using chu traps, literally blowing enemies off mountains with the leaf are all great fun. The standard combat is ok, better than most zelda's, but it's fun when you actually experiment with environment. A lot of enemy encounters in zelda actual have some items around so you can approach the combat more than "run up and use weapon"

No... 30/120 shrines were good. 20 were bullshit trials of strength, 40 were fucking empty, and the rest were retarded easy shit like this webm.

When the shrines are the most meaningful content this game has to offer, 25% of the shrines, or roughly 3 hours worth of shrine content being well made, is a fucking travesty.

I'm not saying the game is shit, cause it's not, but it's certainly not a GotY contender. It's unfinished, overhyped, over praised, and poorly designed in many areas. I finished WW, it's the easiest Zelda, but it does get better toward the end. WW certainly picks up once you approach the end.

I agree on OoT, though it's still a solid game, and better than BotW, SS, WW, and TP. TP would be better than OoT if the wolf stuff was more fleshed out, and the combat and difficulty weren't piss easy. That said, I only ever played through TP once, so that might be the nostalgia talking.

The 2D Zeldas are all much better than the 3D ones, that said, Majora's Mask is easily among the best in the franchise.

who are you quoting? Im just saying combat isn't just running up and using the weapon in BoTW, it allows you to use other options are usually superior. For example, I could use my sword to kill a bokoblin but it could break. Instead if I lift a rock and whack him with it he'll die, or I could use the bombs to launch him somewhere and then get hits in so I won't be damaged, or even stasis a nearby object, hit it less times, and see it fly into his face

I agree the trial of strength isn't good after the third or fourth, but the reward shrines, at least half the time, involved a puzzle outside of the shrine itself. Outside of that, there are definitely some easy shrines like in that webm, but most of them are in areas to introduce you to mechanics and then expanded upon in other shrines nearby. They structured it really poorly since it's an open world, but if you follow the roads you usually get the easier puzzles like that to teach you about mechanics, and then the more complicated ones are deeper in or involved hidden stuff/quest

There are only like 30 shrines that are involved and complex, and that's being generous, as I only recall like 10 being multiple layers. That said, I didn't do all the shrines as they were very tedious. But they're certainly not a replacement for the classic dungeons which were far better designed, and far more satisfying, and far more memorable. And no, the Divine Beasts with literal copy paste objectives and no enemies aren't a fair replacement either.

The game is just BORING. There is no satisfying reward for doing anything, no real sense of progression. What you do in the beginning is the same you're doing toward the end, and it's all mundane as fuck.

And no, chucking rocks at foes or shooting them with bomb arrows stops working on higher level foes. It only works on the red and blue variants. Once you get to black upward, using your weapons is the most effective form of confrontation. And that's where the game falls apart. Especially since during late game, you're much better off avoiding fights to preserve durability and resources as what you'll get back will be s net loss.

It changed the very fundamentals of dungeon design and enemy encounters, as well as introducing a new feature to Social Links, and incorporated demon negotiation from the SMT mainline which was missing in 3 and 4

Along with the new engine allowing for more expressive in-game scenes and various other small improvements on how the game plays and is structured.

Honestly, even with all the complaints people have brought up about it, I still choose BOTW as my GOTY.

For me, the combat is varied even against the high level enemies, there is a genuine sense of progression throughout the game, it is extremely open ended with how you approach each scenario, even against the high level enemies, and the characters were colorful enough. The only real complaint I have is that, yeah, the final boss could've been a bit better designed.

I'm still not sure why the game is getting such hate as of recent. Hype backlash maybe?

1. What Remains of Edith Finch

Suprisingly, this is my GOTY so far. It's only the second walking simulator that I've ever enjoyed (the other being The Stanley Parable) and one of the very few games that managed to move me. Superbly written, captivating story and magical realism that reminds me of One Hundred Years of Solitude.

2. Breath of the Wild

Despite it's many shortcomings it's still a great for me and revolutionary open world game in many ways.

3. Resident Evil 7

The game was too short, but imo it's a perfect new direction for RE series.

I have yet to play Prey, Horizon, Rime and NiOh.

My biggest dissapointment of the year so far was Nier: Automata. This game for me is a "living" proof that it's easy to deceive gamers with edgy, pseudophilosophical and full of ham-fisted symbolism story that people then perceive as "deep" and "amazing".

mario odyssey looks dope tho, will probably pick it up the day of. it's possible that xenoblade will end up surprising me but that series is usually just alright.

BotW will probably be my game of the year. Not sure why so many are so vocal about hating it. Must be too obvious as the goty.

Other than that, I'm a few hours into Horizon since I just got a PS4 and I'm loving it. I played Zelda to last shrine non stop way back when it first released so maybe the time between these games is why Horizon doesn't feel disappointing.
