Warcraft 3 was the height of that, it really gave you more than one genre: rpg, strategy, tower defense, moba, survival horror, even some fucking gta open world map.
It was extremely easy to use the map editor and even add scripts, hell I remmeber one map that was a third person mode where you attacked/jumped by using the keyboard.
The good old days after 9/11 were truly the best era of videogames
