Are you playing on the hardest difficulty?

In this order:
SoC with Autumn Aurora because fuck muh vanilla experience meme.
CS with SRP
And then COP.

You can get some graphic mods for CS and CoP (Absolute texture, atmosfear,...). There are weapons mod too if you like tons on guns.

OP don't play with mods your first time, you'll ruin the experience, plus mods are better appreciated once you understand what they have changed.

HOWEVER I would strongly recommend installing a fan-patch to remove the avalanche of unpatched bugs still left in the games.
Use the Zone Reclamation Project for the original and Sky Reclamation Project for Clear sky. (call of prypyat vanilla is fine and surprisingly bug-free by comparison)
Although you can always ignore my advice and play unpatched through if you like quest-essential NPC's being killed because the game decided to spawn them inside a burning barrel or doors glitching out and never opening,

People are actually recommending complete and autumn aurora, misery for a first playthrough. Dont get me wrong autumn aurora is good (havent played misery) but to recommend it for a first playthrough and call it "Polished vanilla" is retarded since it has big changes. For a newcomer to the series it is best to play the games with the beginner friendly mods in pic related

This time it has to be a fuck up in your end. Try the repacks at the stalker general over at /vg/, they should be unzip and play ready.

Also check if you have the windows update KB2670838, if you do, delete it. It causes crashes with DX10 and 11 programs.
