Here's a fun way to do so: you know how the game has mechanical enemies, like automatons (mostly) and some mechanical spiders? Well, if you reach them before they notice you, through stealth, invisibility or just by running really fast and click on them, you actually deactivate them. Then you can pick them up in your inventory, and THEN you can activate them and they'll join you as permanent party members that don't count against the total party limit. You can have like 40-50 of those by the endgame killing everything that looks funny at you, though I think that will probably make the game run really slow and unstable.

find a gnome kicking a dog AS SOON AS POSSIBLE before the dog dies (you can resurrect the dog, but this is in case you don't have a resurrection scroll or spell learned)
the dog will be called "useless mutt," but contrary to the name he is actually one of the best melee companions since he can tank a lot of damage and hit harder than (literally) a dwarf companion equipped with an enchanted axe

i made a rifle dude when i played this game a decade ago and it didnt work so well

I went all in on charisma and got a huge party including both ogres who hit like trucks.

i can somewhat relate, i tried a gunslinger gal but that didn't work too well for me
went with the generic elf mage

Also, thrown weapons are pretty bonkers in real-time.
