I'm not even talking about backstory, it's the dialogue itself that bores me to death. Almost everybody has zero personality and says the most generic stuff one could think of. I just got to the second field study and I feel like Fie and Jusis are worthless. Although I can appreciate the thief and rapier/fencer archetypes, the game is feeling very sword user heavy. Machias is the worst party member in the game. Though to be fair once I discovered my main team of Rean/Laura/Fie/Elliot I hardly used anyone else. Machias and Alisa were always benched for me while everyone else saw usage at different points. Alisa has an aoe CP recovery move while Machias has jack shit so based on that alone I'd say she's better.

Machias is great for support later on. One of his crafts that costs only 50CP lets your party members get an extra turn when theirs is up which can be handy in a regular fight or when a boss is about to ready a big attack. After Rean, I would consider Fie the second most OP character in the game since she has some great AoE and linear crafts that can inflict status effects and great damage. Once you get a Master Quartz in the game that gives you a high percentage to inflict status effects with any attack, she'll probably break your game.

Forgot to mention also, I would consider Jusis pretty low tier (at least for CS1) since there's a Master Quartz (Mobius?) in the game that gives your normally single target items (that heal and buff) a pretty large AoE. One of his main crafts gives your party pretty great buffs, but you can easily replicate that by cooking food and using it to buff your whole party. I think the Mobius Quartz comes in the middle/middle-late stages of the game so he'll still be viable before then. Even so, as long as you're not completely new to the game and playing on Nightmare, everyone in the game has their uses.

Early chapters on nightmare with the forced parties and when you have not unlocked every quartz slot and not even have all the S-crafts unlocked can be a bit of a pain.
I really had to make proper configurations to guard against specific attacks/debuffs and use a lot of items/food.
On Hard, I like use 1 revival balm/food item per chapter

Helpful tip for people who don't know how to use mages properly, don't try to play it like other jrpgs where you need to have as many spells as possible. Just give them a good AoE spell for coverage from a side element and then concentrate on stacking Cast/Action/Mind quartz and a bell in order to get them to cast as fast as possible.

I am around 10 hours into the game at the moment and i am really liking it. Have there been any confirmation on the second one coming to pc? I got myself a ps3 recently but i prefer playing this type of game on the pc since it can be nice to listen to podcast or videos when exploring dungeons.

I also heard that they were thinking about adding turbo mode to trails in the sky which sounds great. Maybe i will actually finish that series.

Equip someone with a huge range AoE S-Craft and decent strength the Scepter Quartz and have them get the majority of the kills. You'll end up getting a bunch of extra sepith that you can convert into cash from all the elements. Particularly Water and Earth since no one uses those as much.
