I just wish "competitive" games would go the fuck away.
It was fine when Counter Strike was an esport insofar that you could play ESEA or watch the real pros.

But now every single game that comes out HAS to be competitive at every level. Why the fuck people play Counter Strike and think their life begins and ends with whether they win this stupid match on Dust 2 is beyond me.
Why we have to get mad when our teammates die in Rainbow 6 is beyond me.

I just hate it all. But I can't stop playing.

It didn't exist.

It's almost the same as it was since broadband became accessible.

Only the advances in technology allowed people to stream themselves at a decent quality, and professional gaming became more popular. And to make my aging mind feel more stimulated than ever, physics/crafting games are becoming more and more complex. Something i longed since 1990s.

You're fortunate enough that your feelings are a just a part of a bullshit nostalgia world that only exists in your mind. Reality is likely just you going through something you've experienced many times before. It's a sign that you should look for new genres, or just look for other types of entertainment.

The best year for gaming was probably '98. The early to mid 2000s were ok. Things are not nearly as bad currently as you people are acting like they are and in fact we're on a bit of an upswing, this year in particular was good.

If your argument is that AAA games have "gone to shit" then protip they were always fairly crap and you've just gotten old enough to realize it. SJWs have not affected a single game that wasn't already trash which makes them irrelevant.

I will say that the internet was much better in the late 90s early 2000s. But only because memes weren't as popular. Memes fucking suck, and they boil interaction down to prerecorded statements.

Dead cells is better than most of the sidescrollers I grew up playing. My first total war was Medieval 1 and I would have killed for something like warhammer total war back then. You didn't seem to care about Battlefield, but that's one for me too. Many of the mechanics that were unique and made the series stand out are gone. In 1942, recon players could use their binoculars to point out targets for naval gunners and it would show naval gunners where they had to aim. They usually couldn't see what they were aiming at so the recon had to tell them where they were hitting. In Battlefield 2 and 2142, there was the whole commander mode. Bad Company 2 and onward scrapped it entirely.

Another game that I tried to forget about is Total Annihilation, but some anon last night reminded me of that nightmare with this post.
>>
>>386310384
There have been good and bad changes. I like that patches are a thing personally. A lot of my old favourites are blatantly unfinished or buggy as fuck. I also don't mind reasonable dlc. I used to love when a favourite game got an expansion pack.

I posted further up that I used to really enjoy 1942, but the guy said that the series was ruined by sjws but I thought it got stale long before that which was my dispute with him mostly.

this.

overwatch is the best example of forcing esports on a game that could have been 10x more fun had it just been left to develop on its own.

the funny part is that even though competitive games are gaining extreme influence, new games have completely gotten rid of advanced mechanics to try and bring in the number of babby casuals in and make them feel good for putting in less work

The worst of the 10s is even worse than the worst of the 00s, but at least there are good things to give us hope. The 00s looked like being trapped in a terrible dream made of Paris Hilton lookalikes wearing Von Dutch caps and telling you that John Kerry is the greatest man who ever lived, while you await death by mashing buttons on some generic PS2 shovelware. The point was: people from different countries (and vastly different social conditions) like you and me can communicate today, thanks to the widespread use of Internet, while in 2000 most people were still trapped in some mediocre and hopeless personal sphere.

The fact we can tell each other that the disaster is a disaster indeed, while we wouldn't have been able to do that 15 years ago, is an incredible human improvement. Yeah, SJWs, literal children and all kinds of toxic trolls will come in our way. But that's the price to pay, and that's still better than being stuck in the mild, stiff, boring atmosphere of the 00s.

The point is that since 1972 there have been both normie video games and video games that aren't for normies. That never stopped.

Much of the NES catalog catered for normies. Super Mario Bros was a normie game for beginner gamers (Metroid was the one for hardcore gamers). The Sega Genesis coasted to success in USA almost completely on the back of sports games. SNES recovered its popularity on the back of the very normie Donkey Kong Country. And so on.

Also wanna add emo, nu-meta, weeaboos acting like obnoxious caricatures but being completely unironic, Final Fantasy fanboys being fucking everywhere.

When you guys say you miss mid-2000s 4chan/vidya culture, think about whether or not you'd actually like to go back. Do you really want to go back to saying win/fail/epic/you win teh internets unironically? Fuck no you don't, if a 4chan user from 2006 time traveled to today and posted here, you'd tell him to g0 bck to Leddit.

Literally everything wrong with today had its seeds planted in 2007 or so. Fuck the mid-2000s.

If there's a bunch of random shit in this post, it's because I'm trying to fuck with it because it thinks this post is spam. If I miss one thing about 2006 4chan, it's that they just wordfiltered shit instead of catering to pussies who get triggered if you say something they don't like. Imagine telling a 2006 user that you'll get banned for posting cartoon ponies.

Literature is entirely composed of rather good books, Anon. Otherwise it's not literature.

Meanwhile, every single story from any video game goes from "meh" to horrible. So if you like stories, even an okay classic novel will be more satisfactory than the best JRPG.

I don't see why this post got blasted so hard. It's not wrong. I remember back in the pre-wow days (which 2004 falls under), the record for concurrent MMO subscribers was like 220k.

WoW hit 1.5 million in its first quarter in 2005. It's the first game I remember being regarded as a "normalfag game". Before WoW, the only people who would talk to me about video games were my fellow nerds in programming class. After WoW, I had grills asking me about video games because they wanted to try it out.

What you fail to understand is that most of us were young and probably underage b&. I was already in college back in 05 when I started using 4chan exclusively for my internet shitposting. I was surrounded by shit-eaters, but I figured it was because you were all young and stupid.

That's what has happened. You grew up and shit you thought was funny back in the day isn't funny anymore. That happens. There's nothing wrong with growing up.

People become more conservative as they age. The demographics for 4chan has shifted, a lot of you are older now and your sense of humor has changed. There's nostalgia for the bits of material produced "back in the day" that was outstanding and is timeless, but most of it was garbage. Just like most of it today is garbage.

I just don't see as much underage b& these days. Either that, or people are more well-spoken than they were twelve years ago.

Same here. After my rapid teen personality changing shitstorm has ended I'm still the same shit today as I was back then. And even though my tastes changed from when I was a pre-teen and I view life very differently, I still feel like I have the same sense of humor and manner of speech, etc. Most old people say that they still feel the same as they did in their 20s. This led me to believe that nobody grows up, and when you see a happy/grumpy/good/bad person of old age, just pretend that they look 20 and their behavior will instantly make sense and be more relatable. They're the same virgins/chads/retards/cool dudes/heartless bitches/qt girls we have today, but with aged body. I will probably still laugh at shit like

That's what I meant under changing world-view. But that is behavior you consciously do like not being an asshole or choosing different words. The base level of how you experience yourself stays the same. You know that thing about how only you know yourself like you do, and every single other person has their mental image of you, but it's not the same as your own? And nobody will ever know you for real? That's the thing I'm talking about.

Everyone saying otherwise, is either trying to fit in, seeing the grass being greener on the otherside or have their nostalgia goggles too tight. I garuntee when the 90s were happening they didn't think it was as good as they do now.
>>

I grew up in the 00s, they were shit.
>>
>>386324563
Because everything that existed in the 80s still exists today, but also more things exist if you want something else other than the 80s.

Imagine wanting a game like Monster Hunter in the 80s. You'd have to wait 20 years to get it, and in the meantime all you could do is play Tetris.

Now, you can play Tetris AND Monster Hunter.

Pretty neat huh? Can't imagine what the fuck I'd be doing at 1am by myself in the 80s. Shitty television at best.

>mostly American TV shows and sports
>"early 2000s culture"

It's not culture, no one in the rest of the world cares, and TV stopped being relevant anyway. This image comes from someone who's still stuck into the 20th century mindset, when what was aired on TV mattered.

The early 00s sucked and I'm glad they disappeared, though.
>>
>>386324873
Hanging out with friends, even Dungeons and Dragons, Driving around at night listening to Metallica, something less soul sucking than this.

This type if nostalgia itt triggers me.
Like I get OP Pure Pwnage was great and so was the recent movie. But fuck off people itt remind me of those "I misd blockbuster" faggots.
No you fucking don't. You don't miss needing to walk to a fucking store in the rain to here they didn't have the movie you want spend a few bucks on a shitty fucking vhs, go back the next day after school to return and get dinged a rewind fee. Fuck you, netflix, amazon video and piracy are all amazing, I'm glad blockbuster is dead, and you'd be complaining within five fucking minutes of your mom telling you to take the movie back if there was a blockbuster in town. That's if you ever actually used it. Fuck.

If you knew that you are dealing with mass consumer products, and everything is a fabrication for it, you wont see nostalgia or fanboyism, just marketing tactics, and good or bad products.

O that subject I feel like movies don't mean anything anymore, I just don't enjoy them as much, before you had to be dedicated to watching a movie, now you can just turn on the TV and have one playing, or watch an entire TV series in one day, it's mind numbing.

There's no excitement in watching a movie anymore, it's become too common a thing.

Doesn't help that movies are just about all shit these days. But i get your point somewhat. I binge most my tv so it's not the same level as before. Of course missing an episode before pvr fucking sucked, i mean i had a vhs recorder but you'd have to know. I think it's mostly quality and the social element that is the problem. Like I took my parents to dunkirk in IMAX and still got that same vibe. But i wouldn't feel it with generic capeshit #67, or the latest remake or sequel. Nor by myself, which is common considering every home has like 5 screens. The household has gone "from let's watch X tonight" to "have you seen X?" because everyone has their own tv and devices.

>1. There are no arcades anymore,
True because you can just have friends over for most of that. I only started going back to one to play time Crisis 2 since i don't have a crt anymore.
>even nightclubs are disappearing
Are you high? There are probably even more of them now. Ever been to vegas? Maybe this is an American problem since the drinking age is now 30 or whatever so the tsrget demographic is fucked.
>2. Friends would spend the entire night looking at their smartphones like autists
Get better friends. How is that the decades fault.
>3. Instead of hanging out with you, they're too busy managing their 2,381 Facebook friends anyway
Who the fuck uses Facebook?

Honestly this sounds like you just have shit/nofriends or grew up and attribute nobody having free time to the decade like an idiot. I go to the pub all the time and have friends over a lot for bbq, billiards, beer and vidya.
>>

I watch less movies than I did as a kid. By like a lot. I attribute it to time and them being shit. I think the excitement you are referring to is just a childhood thing. I used to go to circuit city and later bestbuy and get super excited. As an adult i fucking hate bestbuy and am triggered just having to step inside. I doubt you'd get excited renting at blockbuster as an adult.

kids born in 2000 did get to experience the end of 90's culture, and weren't given an ipad when they were 3, so i'd say they're going to be the last generation that is completely autistic. I've met kids born after about 2004 and since they've been raised with instant gratification in the form of ipads they have almost no attention span and act like todlers into their teens.

basiply,
>people born in 2004 are 13 years old, and will be our downfall as a species
>>
>>386326952
I dunno, I think I'd still have fun at my age with my friends being all like, you wanna walk down to blockbuster and rent a movie. And then we'd walk downtown and rent some shitty movies, get some snacks, and have more fun than just sitting on the couch and seeing the latest popular films.

Atari wasn't in any danger of losing games. It's stuff like that British boom for the Acorn computer that gets lost forever

You mean "not completely autistic"?

I saw a little girl in the train the other day. Complete autist with headphones + eyes on smartphone for two hours straight, with no attention whatsoever for the surrounding world. It was incredible.
