In Paper Mario 2 Gombella, Yoshi kid, and Vivian were imo the most useful party members. Gombella has tattle, ties with Yoshi for best damage output, and has rally wink. Yoshi has defence piercing, mini egg and a powerful multiple targeting attack. Vivian has the best overall mulitple targetting attack, and veil for the rare occasions of ruff puffs charging or bosses charging.

Why is jumping so much better than using the hammer? Multibounce hits more enemies than quake hammer or fire drive. It scales better from badges that increase your power and spin jumps are much easier to execute as a first strike than the spin hammer. Power bounce is unparreled in singular target damage output. If you choose to invest a bit in badges (I mean why wouldn't you) you can cover all of the weaknesses of jumps cheapily for 4BP (ice power and spike shield) Hammerfags literally cannot compete.
