Really unlike a game like granblue, FGO is a lot more passive when in design. The most important part is to make sure your main servants at a high enough level that they can clear event quests but after you're done with that you can just check the game every so often so you don't waste AP doing whatever you want, whether it's leveling non important servants or farming items/money to raise your main servant's skills. The most important thing I found from the JP server is to devote enough time to clear out the materials in the event shop when they happen since they're the easiest source of ascension/skill mats.

The key is that the gems don't actually have any value in and of themselves. They're just numbers on a screen. The worth is completely arbitrary. Saying "this many gems is worth this much money, but you can also get this much more gems for free" is completely meaningless, but idiots will lap it up because, on paper, it SOUNDS like an amazing deal. It's not. You're giving your money away for numbers on a screen that have no value whatsoever. But the key is in the illusion.

Part of the issue is the relatively low number of Servants. If people could just buy shitloads of SQ, they could power through the gacha to get what they want. In the current US version of the game, there are less than 40 Servants, so they kind of need to do this in order to enforce longetivity.
