It started because of the AVGN movie. James had a black sidekick character and a female tag along. There were moments in the movie where there was some (admittedly awkward) moments of sexual tension between the nerd and the girl, but then randomly at the end of the movie the black sidekick kisses the girl out of nowhere. James just reacts like "Oh wow, wasn't expecting that", but 4chan saw black guy + white girl and just kept calling him a cuck, saying that his wife forced him to do that to the script and that he was a raging SJW for it. some of his newer episodes are decent, the power rangers and paper boy ones felt like some of his old stuff, but that's because just instead of casually playing the games he went moe in deph about then.

I think a lot has to do with the fact that James hasn't put much thought on the games but rather on the episodes, that's why some of the most recent ones like Sonic 06 or Planet of apes were bad, it just literally him experimenting with his green screen while just casually playing the games like he used to.

This, that's the reason why some of his recent episodes are sucking, and that saying a lot when some like Power Rangers were great, James should stop trying to make those low budget skips and stick with the usual formula, It feels like he's just trying to practice his low budget effects while working on the series

Literally his Sonic 06 and Planet of the Apes episodes were the worst offenders, were most of the skips weren't even in the usual basement but all was just green screen up the ass, and everything like he just probably play like an hour into the game before calling out.

It feels like he doesn't know what to do with the series so far when a lot of people want him to go to the usual formula, which is funny because he is so attached to his old videos that can't stop referencing then like in the Megaman or Berenstain Bears episodes. Personally i think he should also go back, just make the videos about the games, have people dressing as guest characters, have Kyle appear sometimes, I know he probably thinks that he's making the series grow and evolve in production but its just not working.

James' angry acting was never good though and always felt forced. Nostalgia Critic actually sounds more legit like an angry manchild but his shrieking is really really annoying so it's still bad for a different reason.

He legit got better over time. Some of his early videos are so bad and unintentionally anti-humor in their commentary it's completely unsurprising he was in special needs. Over the years he's developed a better sense of humor and while they can be pretty fucking bad sometimes, some of his cleverest moments also came in the form of skits. The recent Seaman and Planet of the Apes videos (seriously the latter was not remotely bad) are good examples but the most charming skit he's ever done was Ninja Gaiden.

I never judge his game stuff based on how 'analytical' it is because it's clear AVGN is more of a job than a lifelong passion for him. Obviously he has fun with games but it's not something he's knowledgeable about or even cares to become knowledgeable.

The ironically bad special effects are fine because they're complemented by good cinematography so it's a charming and fun mix of so-bad-it's-good and genuinely-good. It's hard to take note at first but if you've seen MovieBob's garbge videos you'll see just how important the cinematography is to James' videos and how if you don't have that, such content comes off as pathetically cringey as opposed to campy. Moviebob uses irony as a crutch because he's a fucking moron who lacks the observational skill to develop the simplest movie making knowledge.

I'm surprised a lot of people think James has the short end of the stick in angry internet reviewing. AFAIK he's probably the only one who manage to successfully branch off to making videos of his other interests without a toxic fanbase telling him to just focus on AVGN (Overanalyzers was shit tho, should have made it just a normal podcast). My favourite review is probably still the whole Top Gun one, but I wouldn't really be able to choose one with certainty.

But I can tell you this was his best sequence ever, and it comes from a review I didn't even enjoy too much (was never a fan of the 'guests' on the show). His reaction, expressions and comic timing are spot on.
