HOW THE FUCK DO I GET A PERFECT HOUSING BLOCK?
I really like this game (Pharaoh), but I've spent a week in Sandbox trying to nail the perfect housing/service/industry synergy before I go past the third level of campaign and I'm getting frustrated. I always need more workers, or less workers, one god is always pissy, but as soon as I throw them a festival and erect another Temple the next one gets angry. If I erect another industrial sector I have to erect another housing block nearby, leading to the usual not enough/too many workers problem, plus attending all the needs of the houses to get them to upgrade, and even then they're prone to evolve/devolve over several months despite having proper services nearby.
>inb4 learn to roadblock
I have roadblocks set up, I've followed guides and videos, and I've sifted over decades+ old post archives. Tbh I wish I could just build a series of comfy, unconnected villages and have them come together over time instead of feeling pressured to build up a massive city immediately.
Anyways, any other good city builders out there?
>>
You can set up a single mudhut to connect your labor pool to jobs. There, completely changes the game.
You can see why recruiter walkers were scrapped in sequels.
>>
>>386278116
Like if I were to drop a mud-hut next to a fire and architect post in the same roadblock zone as a work camp, some farms, storage yards, and granaries, I won't have empty work camps anymore? Does one do or do I have to set up mini-ghettos in every industrial sector?
>>
>>386279239
You've got a single worker pool, workplaces not fully staffed create a recruiter walker. If he walks past a house, he's able to recruit people.
I usually set up a big 4 square mud hut for no reason, but a single one should do. As long as you have enough unemployed workers and the recruiter can reach it, you're golden.
>>
>>386279718
Alright, so I set up working ghettos around industry and what, use blocks to create palatial estates that exist for their own sake for my culture ratings?
>>

Good luck. I find city management to be way easier in Zeus. The only problem in that game is that some maps are too fucking small. There's only two or three missions in all the campaigns with that problem, but still. Never go to the map called "Taras", it will fuck you up.

>Houses just to enable production
Have a road go along the houses on the outside ring of your block, with one tile of blank space (that you will fill with sanctuaries or gardens) one tile away from your block. Connect that road to the production buildings, so you won't have to build shitty poor houses everywhere. I don't know if that makes sense
>>
>>386282673
I've never liked loop housing with garden centers. Not slummy enough like Egyptian cities would have been. Instead I made four large housing blocks in rectangle circled by services and broken as necessary by entertainment blocks and few gardens. Not optimal but who the fuck plays city-builders for max efficiency?

Nothing warms the cockles of my soul like a perfectly planned city.
>>
>>386277594
Your city layout looks like a mess. Just go look up some easy layout on some guides and copy it.

>one god is always pissy
How does that even happen? Just throw a petty festival for every gods in order and build an equal amount of temples/shrines.

I really love this game but I kinda gave up near the end because it starts relying on your saved up money from the previous stage to beat the next stage. It's that one fucking stage where you get so little time to set up your town and army before some faggots come attacking. I burnt all my saving to survive barely intact and still lost later on because I go broke.

>For no reason

No there's a reason, and it's that for whatever reason single mud huts would occasionally get their nearby buildings de-staffed whereas a 2x2 won't.

To be perfectly honest though, for an agricultural society the single-mud-hut living conditions for employed men wasn't too far off from reality. This is because during farming seasons, the men needed to be near the fields to be productive, while the rest of their families would live in the nicer blocks in town. This is why many ancient holidays had harvest festivals that doubles as romantic holidays (Egypt is no exception), and it's because during these festivals, the men would go home with the harvest and their wives (who have been waiting for this for a year) would finally enjoy getting some fresh food and their brains fucked out.

>>
>>386283791
I don't really think you can get rid of the "center garden" in the loop, because of how walkers work.
The loop has an optimal length due to walker range. You can build a loop eith its interior filled with houses, but if you shortned it's length by one, you could increase the height by one instead, and get space for gardens inside. So forth until dimnishing returns to due to decoration range

Actually laughed at this. But yeah, never found building 100% optimally that fun, it just makes the game feel too formulaic. For example, now I'm playing Cities Skylines and doing grid cities would be objectively superior to anything else, but fuck that. It leads to cities that all build the same, look the same, feel the same and thusly just get me bored with the game.

Stop thinking about the game in terms of its rules and start thinking as if the game was the world.

i.e. don't optimize. let it grow naturally. Build a building somewhere when you need it approximately over there, not just because it satisfies your need for geometric symmetry.

>Your city layout looks like a mess

>>386292035
Started doing this thanks to this thread. Went back to Sandbox, created a nice little neighborhood in the west side grain fields with water lift and irrigation, then when it was going strong with straw in the yards and grain in the granaries I built barley farms in the inundation up the road, then when that was good I expanded another set of farms in Grainsville, then started on gold mining after building a palace.
Trying to fulfill my dream of several villages working separate industries that evolves into a diverse, prosperous city.
First thing I did was set up a highway system to my first three prospective settlements. >>386284082

If you have another road touching the building with walkers you sometimes have to put several roadblocks in a row to prevent them from spawning there.

Which game had the best aesthetics for finished cities, /v/? Or wich one was your personal favorite?

I always thought Zeus was the only one that looked more or less like an actual city after most of the map was used. Having some place where the entire screen was filled with stuff felt both amazing to watch and fullfilling.

It's the easiest/laziest fail condition that devs can add to make a game """challenging""". It is a legit challenge (I'd never call it artificial difficulty), you need to be efficient to beat it but it just isn't fun.
>>
>>386295106
The same thing happened to me in The Sims (in all of them except the first, if I recall). The chances in the game file become so massive after some time that the computer doesn't allow the game to chance archives or something, it's ridiculous. Good thing this type of problem doesn't happen is these old games.

>>
>>386295646
desu this kind of thing isn't funny or interesting to do like it is in a game in the style of the sims, when your city fail at something everything just crumbles and gets destroyed, it's no fun to watch, just stressful
>>
>>386291474
In SimCity: go ahead and make a "supergrid" of streets, but fill them in with random roads. OldShoes or whats his name has some infographics to that effect. If the city building gen ever gets revived on /vg try lurking there.

Aside from 2, which is the comfiest out of 3, 4 and 5? My vote goes for 4.

What are same city builders which have some decent combat, preferably mainly defensive/turtling?

Something like Settlers or Stronghold. Something more complex than Tropico.
>>
>>386296702
4 is probably the most "complete", but adds a lot of things that simply make the game a cake walk.

I personally like 3 with the dlcs, but it still just feels like 4 eventually. 5 is terrible. Hopefully 6 with it's multiple islands will be much better.
