This game makes me feel educated.
>>
I like it too and it's a decent game for teaching you very basic orbital mechanics and physics but reality is a lot more complicated. Still a great game.
>>
>>386266286
>>>/vg/egg
>>
>>386267654
Last I checked, this game isn't allowed on /vg/ on any thread
>>
I'm amazed no one else has really tried to compete with it.

I love KSP, but if some competent people decided to make a clone on a better suited engine it would blow KSP out of the water.
>>
>>386268018
What? Can I get a quick rundown on that?
Sounds weird, why wouldn't they allow KSP on /vg/? Every other game has a general.
>>
>>386268542
A lot of drama and incompetence led to slow development and cut features. The crowd that populated /kspg/ became more and more disillusioned with the game until the threads were basically just pure shitposting that had little if anything at all to do with the game.
>>
>>386268542
It's a long, boring story, mostly full of shitposting. I'm pretty sure the including the terms "KSP" or "kerbal space program" or any derivative will not allow you to post a reply.
>>
>>386266389
I remember that when I played this game a few years ago, literally all you had to do to reach orbit was to go past a certain speed, wait till you're at a certain altitude, then turn 90 degrees so that you are sideways, then just wait

oh and you need two or three stages
>>
>>386268542
A handful of attention whores completely destroyed the thread because they had to make the discussion about them. The mods were 110% in the right in this case.
>>
>>386269298
How do you reach orbit in real life?
>>
>>386269513
same way but you have a large team monitoring all sorts of instruments and working as a team so that they can deal with any anomalies quickly and efficiently

in KSP shit can't go wrong and you don't have a billion things to monitor
>>
>>386269513
you do whats called a gravity turn that needs to be carefully calculated to ensure minimal fuel usage during your ascent
>>
>>386269298
The game has a more realistic aerodynamics model and heat simulation now, so it's a little more complex than it used to be.

That said, getting into orbit isn't really supposed to be too difficult. Orbital maneuvers like transfers and rendezvous/docking require more skill.

For most people the difficulty is just because they have no clue how space flight really works when they start playing.
>>
>>386269662
In KSP a gravity turn is a lot more efficient than doing everything in right angles. It's probably even harder to do that now that they overhauled the physics.
>>
>>386270043
okay and I believe you

I too didn't know anything about anything, I just read the magical figures from somewhere (speed I need to reach and altitude for when I turn) and it worked every time, no problems
>>
>game made by dumbass spics
>educate somebody

LOL WUT
>>
Remember when they said they were going to start working on adding multiplayer like 4 years ago?
>>
>>386270398
I just wish they had actually implemented that resource flow chart they teased a few years ago.
>>
>>386269298
you can still kind of do that but it requires a lot more power

and of course, with career mode you're trying to optimize as best as possible so a nice, curved ascent is best
>>
>>386270459
The original plan for resources would've been so great. Too bad they decided they wanted the Billy audience instead.
>>
>>386268914
>threads were basically just pure shitposting that had little if anything at all to do with the game.

Yes, and? The Starcraft threads have been that since the creation of /vg/.

Now that KSP is owned by Take-Two I really hope we'll see a proper sequel made without Unity and with proper graphics. But I just know there's gonna be DLC everywhere.

/egg/ has to refer to it as "that mexican scam artist game" in the OP because the game's name is wordfiltered.

/kspg/ was literally shitposted to death. The threads got so slow and some anon(s?) got so frustrated that they just started posting bestiality porn so the thread was deleted. Every time a new /kspg/ thread was made, it'd devolve into shit posting and more bestiality porn was posted.

The mods got so sick of it that they just banned the general entirely because they can't do their job properly and it's easier to just ban a thread than it is to monitor it.
>>
>>386270194

This would work in real life too. There's nothing magic or complicated about orbiting an astral body. You just need to be out of the atmosphere so there is no force from drag and get to a minimum velocity which is orthogonal to the acceleration from gravity
>>
>>386266286
i really like KSP but I really don't like how there isn't shit to do on the surface of any of the planets or moons, and my computer isn't good enough to handle base building, my FPS dips to 5-10 with a decent base constructed because of the large amount of parts everywhere that aren't going away. Why hasn't anyone made mods with more things to do on planets, or is that just not possible with how the game is coded?
>>
>>386270683
Oh shit, I wasn't aware of that.

They should definitely be working on a sequel instead of the boring expansion pack they're doing that's basically already been done better by mods.

Actually most of the problems with the development of this game have been that modders beat the devs to every planned feature, and usually with better functionality.

Hell, you still need mods to display basic flight telemetry and add life support.
>>
>KSP devs update game
>breaks mods
>hire modders to work on the game
>broken mods don't get fixed because the modders are on the dev team now
>the devmodders get paid to implement their mod into the game as an official mechanic
>the official version of their mod is shit and pales in comparison to the actual mod
>you can't get the mod anymore so you're stuck with the shitty version

How many times has this happened?
>>
>>386270683

There's nothing wrong with unity
>>
>>386271210
you forgot
>hired modder gets fired/quits a few months later and his work never get implemented
>>
>>386271278
Unity's physics engine is not efficient enough for KSP, and crafts with huge part counts are absolutely brutal on the framerates.
>>
>>386271278
For some games, but it's poorly suited for a game like KSP.

They had to employ many hacky work-arounds to get the game to work, because they don't have source code access.

I made a Minmus base awhile ago but never bothered to visit due to the shit fps. iirc there's a mod that allows you to reduce the part count by merging pieces.

>>386271820

>>
>>386271820
i tried that a while back (2 or so years ago) but it doesn't work well with roverdude's kolonization mod because you gotta connect all the base modules with flexible tubes which can't be welded, among other parts. maybe that is fixed now, I just haven't built up the nerve to start another career game from scratch, only to find out something doesn't work 40 hours later.
>>
Good place to download the latest version free?

Played it a long time ago before they started charging, might give it another shot since I see you can do shit like moon bases and walking around now? >>386271820 Looks kinda interesting compared to just launching a rocket and doing it again.
>>
>>386271931
Rover autopilot is nice, sue me.
>>
>>386271835
I remember when Maxmaps streamed for /vg/ back when he first started and made it to the Mun within a couple hours, which was pretty impressive for a community manager when some of the actual devs who streamed in the past couldn't pull that off. I lost my gif of him cheering while his lander tumbled on the surface of Minmus.
>>
>>386268349
It has been bought by Take Two, so we'll see how it goes
>>
>>386272051
>before they started charging
There's a whole star system now, but like one of the previous anons said, there isn't really anything to do besides get there.

There's also a campaign mode where you earn science and money for accepting and doing missions. Seems like they added it to try and make it look like there's a reason to land at and explore specific places, but it's all randomly generated and feels shallow.

They released it on GOG so it shouldn't be too hard to find a DRM-free version.
>>
>>386272649
Oh nice.
Yeah there wasn't even a "moon" to actually get to when I played, just a texture. There was like 3 types of rocket stages, basic fins, etc. Some cool mods that early on at least.

I'll look for some GOG uploads then.
>>
>>386272314
>maxmaps
>community manager
he was the one who was telling the devs to not develop things people wanted like multiplayer and a proper resource system and focus on things like the very poorly implemented campaign mode
>>
>>386272905
Don't forget how he slandered B9 because Max is a petulant baby.
>>
>>386272850
Yeah well the game grew a fucking lot since them, there are hundreds of parts (thousands, if you want to dive into mods), a bunch of planets and a dozen or so moons, plus they actually made the physics look somewhat believable.

Considering the thousands of hours people dumped into this game and the endless supply of mods of all kinds, the asking price isn't that much IMO

They updated the demo to something more recent than an alpha build, so you can try that too
>>
>>386273023
He did? What the fuck, I assume you mean B9 the guy who made the B9 Aerospace Parts mod and some other stuff, fuck maxmaps man.

>>386273330
>I never understood how people could call the game a scam
Go to /vg/ and look up maxmaps. Check out the development history after 0.18.
>>
>>386273314
Wouldn't you also have to completely rework the engines and fuel tanks and all that to work with a scale solar system?
>>
>>386267654
/egg/ here, eat shit.
>>
>>386273392
I'm not sure what you mean by barns, but the last version I played was 1.1 release, and it's honestly not that much different from like 0.25, they have more advanced physics and atmosphere/heating mechanics, but on the whole the game is mostly the same. there is a very basic stock ISRU integrated, but mods are still better IMO.
>>
>>386273472
The mod takes care of that, it's a huge pack of mods that change everything (including rocket parts) so you can actually navigate in the 10X solar system
>>
>>386273659
lvl 1 buildings used to be wooden, barn-like structures
>>
>>386268542
the ksp general on /vg/ was populated by about 5 guys who had a hate circlejerk for the game so /kspg/ is banned now
>>
>>386273472
RSS does that already, the biggest problem with RSS is you need an extremely good computer, because you have to build MUCH larger rockets which will lag like hell during flight due to the immense part counts just to get them into Earth orbit.

>>
>>386273730

>>
>>386273730
I have never seen that in any version of KSP I have played, level 1 buildings were always the same concrete/steel structures as level 3, just smaller. I'm still mad they don't have an easter egg where you can encounter a human astronaut crew in a hidden cave on a planet or something.
>>
>>386273745
You could just get a procedural parts mod, but as Max said, that's awful because he wants ships to have tons of parts.
>>
>>386273824
He's at Valve now, modeling space helmets.
>>
>>386273824
I miss when it was good, but the circlejerk completely destroyed it by mid 2014.
>>
>>386273894
I actually like ships having loads of parts, if only the game was optimized a little better. I also like the mod that causes random part failures like any real spaceflight could encounter, so you have a little bit more stuff to do besides burn, time accel, and wait.
>>
>>386273987
I mostly stick to aircraft myself. FAR and pwings is all I need.
>>
>>386273873
>I'm still mad they don't have an easter egg where you can encounter a human astronaut crew in a hidden cave on a planet or something

I'm still kinda mad there aren't many Easter eggs at all honestly. The game would be perfect for having weird shit near the edges of the solar system.

Don't you like those monoliths with their corporate logo they put everywhere?
>>
>>386271776
The problem with KSP and unity other than the Physics never entirely working right (constant nonstop float errors, leading to orbits that arent on rails constantly drifting) was the fact Unity liked to load all textures twice into memory. With mods taken into account KSP would easily hit the 3.4gb application limit forcing the use of the 64bit version.

Pfft, at least that's an orbit.

My first trip to Jupiter in Orbiter went as follows:

>Delta Glider with infinite fuel
>Accelerate until I escape Earth's orbit
>Retrograde burn on my solar orbit until my orbital velocity drops to zero
>Point boosters at sun
>Boost until at Jupiter's orbit
>Maintain "altitude" by periodically firing boosters at sun
>Wait until Jupiter arrives
>Desperately try to scramble enough speed to catch it

I only started studying transfer orbits to travel between the Jovian moons.

Anyone else have fun with the weapon mod? Turns out trying to drop a Tsar Bomba precisely on the launch pad while also being a safe distance away is damn near impossible.

but we know how a new game developed would end up right?

>it would have an interface designed for sitting on a couch, and using an xbox or PS4 controller even in the PC version.

>developed by developers who are overworked and even more apathetic than SQUAD.

>managed by people who don't give a shit, who probably never were into PC games, and who simply want to get a project finished in order to climb up the ladder.

>produced by people who see mods/moddability as cutting into their bottom line, reducing DLC potential and "just making things easier" for pirates.

I don't get why Multiplayer or Resources were such a big deal..

they were outside of the game's scope.

Multiplayer I don't even know how it would work, or if it would be worth the dev time necessary to do it. Since it would open up a can of worms with regards to networking, and how to do/deal-with the time-acceleration

I'm more pissed about some of the issues with assets (models/textures) not getting a real look-over.

>3-man capsule has offset door, making it a bit of a pain to attach parachutes to.

>the campaign/career mode is pretty bad in terms of parts progress, starts with a 1-man capsule rather than something unmanned.

>limited number of craft interiors gets irritating after a while.
>similarly there's a limited number of parts, many of which aesthetically don't fit with each other
>Kerbin is empty, needs more buildings/towns/shit on the surface in order to give it some level of detail.
>lack of a natural feeling set of challenges/steps.
