It is "technically" correct. The Katakana can indeed be read as "Aeris". It can also be read as "Eallis". Usually in this sort of case, it can be translated as any of them, as the author/creators/company have not expressed how they desire for the name to be officially read in english.
However, in this case, we DO know how it was intended to be, and it is "Aerith". You'd know this if you checked the spin offs, where they keep most mistranslated names (such as Zack instead of Zax), but have changes Aeris into Aerith. Because it's a play on words with "earth".
