Defend this
>>
>>386262101
I can't, I don't know what 18/00 means
>>
>>386262101
This is a random roll?
>>
>>386262101
I'm not defending that meme game
>>

t. sape
>>
Something that should have stayed with the tabletop.
>>
>>386262546

Fuck off neander
>>
>>386262247
It's some esoteric kind of strength measurement that's a heirloom of first DnDs. Kind of like percentage to 19th point.
>>
>>386262247
A warrior class gets a percentile added to str, that way they can be stronger than a mage with 18 str
18/0 is about 19 str 18/20 about 20,kinda
>>
>>386262613
This. Randomness works great for tabletop because it helps emergent storytelling. In games it just causes you to fail where you otherwise wouldn't, leading to pointless repetition of the same plotlines to return where you were. New Vegas did a great job making stat checks a solid value instead of random, and I think Dark Souls implements stats in combat very well by making everything play out the same way if you have the same stats.
>>
>>386262247
It's just short for 18/100.
>>
>>386262247
The highest stat value is usually 18, but warrior classes in 2nd edition DnD get exceptional strength. If they roll 18 strength they roll again for strength from 18/01 to 18/00 (18/100%). So 18/00 is the highest possible strength they can roll naturally (though some races can have more due to bonuses). It's very rare to get 18/00 along with those other high stats. You can't just reallocate your stats to go from 17 strength to 18/00, you've got to roll 18/00 on your first try.
>>
why arent intelligence and wisdom the same stat
>>
>>386263337
Intelligence is like IQ, how quickly you process information. Wisdom is more about knowledge and good judgement.
>>
At least the game is nice enough to let you store the roll.

Mind flayers are going to fugg you
>>
>>386262101
It is an archaic system for char creation from the dark age of gaming.
Very popular among the elderly as it brings back memories of their youth.

Be thankful you missed the era when this was considered acceptable.
>>
>>386265232

Don´t tell me you´re actually defending clicking the roll button over and over again until RNG decides you get a good roll.
>>
>>386262101
No need. Just play Skyrim instead.
>>
>>386265562
Are you literally retarded?
>>
>>386265562
No.
Autistic spamming of the reroll button never tickled my pickle hence the "be thankful you missed this" part of my post.
>>
>>386265897

I thought you were being ironic.

Actually you might still be, I honestly can't tell anymore here.
>>
>>386262101
Still a better system than its successor.
>>
Dice were a mistake.
>>
>>386262101
I hate character creation where you select a from a multitude of stats before you start the game. I hate it with a passion and yet I often enjoy the games. I wish devs wouldn't do this. It took me days to start wasteland 2 because you had to do it for 4 fucking characters. It's not fun. Just start everyone off with the same stats and let them build their character thought the game.
>>
>>386266108
No I legit dislike RNG in char creation.
If you want to add it for the autistic among us fine.
I would rather have a pool of points and go from there.
>>
>>386262101
>priests
>wisdom
That's funny.
>>
>>386266554
Well you do need good intuition and decision making skills to be able to molest all those small boys and not get caught.
>>
>>386262101
I can't, it's completely pointless and does nothing but waste time to make you reroll if you want "optimal" stats, which you probably do since a full BG1>BG2 campaign takes a fuck long time.
>>
>>386266338
This. The problem with this games is that they aren't any good the first playthrough because you have no clue what stats are useful or not. So it's only enjoyable on the second playthrough... but by then you've seen most of the game, so why fucking bother. And it's no excuse to have to expect players to restart the game over and over everytime they realize something is fucked.
>>
>>386262101
Rolling stats is an ok system for p&p and absolutely pointless for crpgs. Point buy is superior for both.
>>
>playing an rpg for the first time
>get to the character creation screen
>spend several hours doing research on how to build a character that doesn't suck

In some weird way I actually enjoy doing this.
>>
>>386262940

Very interesting points, not used to seeing a good post on these boards
>>
>>386266897
>you have no clue what stats are useful or not.

Modern gamers...
>>
>>386267287
Same. It's probably because I have an obsession with knowing how things work, irl or in vidya.
>>
>>386267287
this is one of the funnest parts of the game desu. And then figuring out how to exploit the ruleset to make some very odd but powerful characters
>>
just bought baldie's gate a few days ago and am starting off with a very small amount of table top dnd experience, also a shit ton of hours spent (like 500 or so) playing fallout 2

how fucked am i?

ps. i like loading a quicksave so that my party members don't just die, i just want to fucking know whats up with their part in the world
im sorry
>>
>>386262659
>heirloom
More like a forgotten relic. this has not been a thing for 3 editions now.
>>
>>386262940
>>386268075
Actually, random chance element still can serve it's purpose even outside of classical tabletop games if it is a part of a larger risk management model. It's particularly relevant to turn-based games where it (if used right) forces player to juggle multiple possible outcomes simultaneously, force contingency planning etc...
That said, randomness on shit like starting stats really does not make any sense: honestly it made little sense even in table-tops, unless the actual desire was to deprive player of agency over what his character is like. Not even that, when you think about it, because even in table top there was still an option to re-roll endlessly, which just defeats the fucking point to begin with.

So there is a place and function for random elements in games, even in RPG's, it just has to be applied thoughtfully.
>>
Video games have one objective: win

In Dungeon and Dragons it's all about the adventure and fun. You can have a deeply flawed character because one of your friends will pick up the slack and get their moment to shine. If anyone tried to minmax some stupid shit with constant rerolls they'd be kicked from the group for being such a faggot
>>
>>386266897
>Pick a class which specialises in sneak attack or crits
>half the enemies are immune
Every fucking d&d game
>>
>>386262101
the use of DnD gameplay mechanics in video games is indefensible.
>>
>>386267139
>Point buy is superior for both
Shit taste
>>
>game lets you distribute stats points wherever you want
>character is completely shit if you deviate away from the one and only build that doesn't make them useless

My biggest problem with megten.
>>
>>386266554
Priests need wisdom to interpret the tales of their gods and use those stories to cast magic. If you're trying to argue that priests lack wisdom because they believe in a god - it's a fantasy games. Gods exists, your character is nearly one.
>>
>>386273836
More importantly, in a non-secular non-scientific society, Priests were THE people who were literally tasked to interpret the world and communicate it's most profound nature to the rest of the society.
It's not even about fantasy or non-fantasy: priests were considered the apex of human wisdom in pretty much pre-scientific society in real world, at least in theory. It was definitely their wisdom and capacity to interpret and explain the world in convincing fashion that landed them the damn gig.

>>386262101
only took me 3 minutes of rolling
>>
>>386272360
For crpgs it absolutely is. Depending on the type of p&p campaign the DM is running it often is. Playing underpowered character can be fun but if you are weak as fuck compared to other players' characters it can get old if it's a long campaign. This can of course be mitigated with reroll rules and roll 4 pick 3 best dice etc.

>>386271121
You miss the point. This isn't about randomness, this is about devs being lazy and resorting to numbers instead of minigames and other ways to complete objectives.
>>
>>386274746

>17 strength
>>
>>386275221
I'm not missing the point, I'm just disagreeing with you and apparently you can't handle that, even in face of actual arguments.
>>
>>386275470
I think we're talking about a different things.
I'm talking about stats being retarded.
>>
>>386276027
Then you are not talking about anything any of the previous conversation was actually talking about. Also you are a moron for thinking that.
>>
>>386276173
Prolly, fuck you too.
>>
>>386262939
>>386263279
Not the guy you responded to, but thanks for explaining.
