The way I see FF keeps on experimenting with it's settings and trying to get more and more modern, while DQ just remains what is always was. Some people just want a simply fantasy RPG game instead of the constant clusterfucks that FF stories are known for.

ff changes virtually everything except like spell names. DQ usually only adds on previous games core gameplay, with minor tweaks here and there.

It's basically Digimon vs Pokemon. Both are enjoyable, but the latter is way more consistent while the former is more experimental

Dragon Quest usually has the story as an add-on for the gameplay.

Final Fantasy usually preffers to write a DRAMATIC story, and maybe add some gameplay.

Dragon Quest is conservative as fuck compared to Final Fantasy which re-invents the wheel for each core entry. It kinda makes sense why it's more popular in Japan when you think it that way. Also, Toriyama's art was that massive boost DQ initially benefited from over there while in the west he was a nobody.

FF has always been a cashcow whore that changed itself to reflect what was popular at the moment to cash on that, that is why the series has no identity and is splitting its fanbase with each entry.
DQ stayed the same and refined or reworked its core formula while keeping the basics the same.
