That's pretty damn good, you know. Even if we assume that those 100 players are all the same players (as opposed to being replaced as the day goes on), that's still $3000 in Cleve's bank account after one day. If what he says is true, and he actually has 1k+ sales, I think he's damn happy with even this limited amount of success.

One person doing something for 20 years won't improve it past a certain point. There's only so much you can do by yourself. You need perspective to improve something, and you can't get perspective if you only have one point of view.

Games get better as their developers make more games, not better or longer games. It is about experience.

>>
>>386230630
Well it depends really, DF has been in development for quite some time and it's already a good game, and it's going to be in development another 20 years, and I can only see it getting better.
>>
>>386230578
If he's telling the truth, and he made $30k in the first day? With sales still on an upwards trend? That's pretty decent.

You're right, though. If you look at it in terms of the time period, it is really poor - $1500 a year? Pathetic. You just can't look at it like that. That time is gone and wasted. Where Cleve is sitting, he didn't make $30k for 20 years of work. He made something that took 20 years to make, and now people have given him $30k. It's not spread out. It's all at once. He didn't make $1500 per year, he just made $30k in one day. There's a subtle but important difference there.

>>386230667
>Keep telling that to yourself cleve

DF has been getting regular patches, though. That's different. Updates are like little miniature games in and of themselves. You can look at them as discrete entities, learn from your mistakes, improve.

DF wouldn't be nearly as good if it had been in development up until today and then suddenly released.

>>
>>386230890
There's no market in pandering to morons. I wouldn't want to make that kind of money.

Grimoire is an elite game that is unlike anything else up on the Steam store. I defy you to find anything like it in the thousands of games listed. I defy you to find a game like it on the planet. It's not even a Wizardry clone really - it's everything Wizardry should have been but never was.

I'm not competing with Sir-Tech any more. Amongst other reasons, they went bankrupt 17 years ago.

I'm not competing with anybody. Grimoire is the pinnacle of the peak of the summit of the incline. I could probably get 99.95 from a lot of people but I don't want to limit it just to the very elect of RPG players. I made a compromise and and priced it somewhere just under current AAA titles. The truth is there is not an AAA title you could buy nowadays that deserves to crawl up on a high chair and plant a kiss in the crack of Grimoire's ass when it comes to enjoyment, immersion and wonderful escape.

I say all this with confidence because I have been playing my game 12 hours a day for two months and I can assure you there has never been anything like it in all of recorded human history. It's the greatest thing ever to emerge from that genre. The fact is, people who enjoy that genre are considering it cheap at that price. If you are not a connoisseur of the genre then why would I amend anything in it to appeal to you? It's like saying Mozart needed more cowbell.

Trust what I am saying. Those of you who played the demo and got the scent of greatness will know the full game has achieved it. For whatever it lacks it has much more in abundance.

I was just playing Kublai Cathedral to check all the logic and was almost weeping tears of joy at how wonderfully told the story of everything is in the game. I had forgotten a lot of it and it was like reading the work of someone else.

You always sell niche products at a premium. You aren't going to attract any more buyers by lowering the cost. At least, not enough to be worthwhile. Can you honestly say that if he halved the cost he'd have more than twice as many buyers? I doubt that there are even that many people who know the game exists.

You ALWAYS sell niche products at a premium.

>>
>This game is not shovelware. It's not a casual game. It's not trying to appeal to a wider audience to make more money by dumbing down to lowest common denominator. Coming from a society that has dumbed down everything to cater to them since the day they were born, many newbs will wonder what the fuss is all about. Grimoire is for elite connoisseurs of computer roleplaying games with very refined tastes. If you don't think a game like Grimoire is worth $1000, much less $40 then you probably are not a fan of these kinds of games. You are welcome to look on the Steam store, on GOG, on Humble Bundle or anywhere on the internet to find a similar game. You won't find it because it doesn't exist. Even the Wizardry titles are just pale shadows of Grimoire now, they are forerunners but Grimoire gets it all right. Grimoire is the gold standard for these sorts of games. People who believe this was going to be just another blobber will discover they were sorely mistaken. Grimoire is the first and possibly last game of this calibre, at least until Grimoire II arrives.

>P.S. After what is likely an opening discount, Grimoire will never be discounted or put on sale ever again. You will never see Grimoire sold for $15 but in 8 years you might see it down to $20. In the meantime, I guess you won't be playing this game if you're not respectful enough to pay what it is worth as product. I am amazed at the shovelware people pay $50 for without thinking but believe because Grimoire has an old fashioned aesthetic it must be worth less that those titles. Neanderthals have an older aesthetic too ... 300 pounds of muscle, six foot tall with an 1800 cc brain and the ability to see in the dark. I don't know that this implies they were inferior to modern people.

Compare that to any AAA developer today, or even the politely-restrained behaviour of good AA developers. Sometimes, you just want to see someone exaggerate the crap out of their game. Why isn't anyone ever willing to put it out there and say "this is the best fucking game ever"?

This is a giant oversight. Who is supposed to spend hundreds of hours acclimating to the stats and systems governing this game with nothing but trial, error and dumb luck? That is absurd. An excellent way to your game gets dumped fast.

>inb4 some neanderthals hooting and circlejerking

As a child with nothing to do and hours to kill I'll allow that some boneheads Forest Gump'ed their way through a Wizardry or two, but the intelligent among us primed their understanding with the information in the manual and tread a more graceful path through the games.

I find it really hard to believe that the developer, as fond as he is of the bullshit he writes, worked for 20+ years on full length 600 hour game and recorded nothing in the way of simple mechanic or stat descriptions. Not that I could stand reading it were it laid down in Cleve's usual conceited style.

Again, there's a difference between "$1500 per year of development" and "$30k on the first day of the game's release".

Cleve did not get $1500 per year for his time. He got $0 per year for his time. He is only now getting any actual benefit out of it. But for 20 years, he wasn't making anything. I expect that Cleve is ecstatic to be making any money at all, after 20 years of nothing.

I'm not saying that it was a good time investment. I'm not even saying that it's very much money. I'm saying that Cleve most likely appreciates it nonetheless.

If you add up all the time he actually spent on the game, it wouldn't add up to more than two years of working full time

you are just an asshole

did it kill two party members

Also why is morgana's in green
>>
>>386232257
I was under the impression that the Shrine was already one of the easier starting areas. Also, I already invested 5 or so hours in the game exploring the Shrine and Aquavia, I didn't know the Green Hand Gang would still be this difficult even after everyone in my party has advanced to level 2.

Anyone notice how THICC Cleve is? I would like to rub my blobber all over that big, soft ass. I would restrain him by his fanny pack and work my finger over his thin lips until he accepted it inside his mouth. Then I would remove his jeans and tight, white traditional underwear. He would resist at first but after whispering soft reassurances regarding the neanderthal dna I would deposit between those enormous, quivering white buns, he'd surely accept. "Golden b-baby rising?" he would ask closing his eyes, "Incline." I reply, covering his mouth with my hand.

Poison is an excellent early game spell. IF you can drag a hard fight out.
Some harder enemies will take loads of damage from crippling poison. (The bandits that resist sleep are still vulnerable to poison)

Sleep and Blindness however is probably better for minimising damage.

Brain Rot makes enemies fight each other (affected will attack his allies). This made Green Hands piss easy because they just fought themselves. Not to mention thath witchraft hex makes enemies pass turns (they don't take poison dmg then but it works on bosses!).

Might and Magic would be my recommendation.

3, 4&5 (worlds of Xeen), and 6 for sure.
7 and 8 are ok. Avoid IX.
1 and 2 are pretty outdated. (Though they do have a graphic upgraded console versions. Either SNES or Megadrive)

Then maybe look into Dungeon Master and its sequel.

Grimrock are shit tbqh. They are exclusivels fight - puzzle games. No variety past that at all, plus system is flawed and fucked beyond repair. There are two cheze ways per character that will make you way op by the middle of the game, and nothing else. It's not worth the effort to even discover if it's hard or not. Largely imbalanced and undeserving of the dedication necessary to map its systems and mechanics without either an immersive unification of tone across visuals and audio, an interesting story or engaging gameplay mechanics to reward such loyalty. Also the designer is a cunt so there's even very little hope of any appreciable, humane relationship forming between "artist" and the player.

Through trial, error and several deaths that could've been avoided if the game actually bothered to explain how shit worked, which is by far the worse type of bullshit difficulty there is.

Say what you will about games like I Wanna Be The Guy but at least that game didn't throw random bullshit deaths at you by hamstringing your controls or keeping mechanics necessary to progress through the game behind needless obfuscation.

If there was a thing like "help" tab or some sort of text prompt that shows up when you hover over an option, that would fix so many issues with the game without requiring a manual.

It boggles my mind to no end how a man who has been working on this piece of shit for 20 years somehow never thought to include something that has been a staple in gaming since the NES.

So you're admitting it actually pales in comparison to the complexity of Wizardry and is not actually a game equal to its caliber. because that is absolutely not the case there. Also I'm interested to know how you what classes, skills, spells are viable mid to late game since you're already aware that everything "can be figured out by a player over 12 who has played an RPG before".

They are not. You look at stats and skills in Wizardry and you can sorta figure out what they do on your own (except Mythology I guess which is a stupid name) and then you look at Gwimwah and you get shit like the FEL stat, half of the classes not being playable unless you spend literal hours rolling 30s with all the races and hoping it works and skills that you have no fucking clue what they do because their names are so incredibly obtuse.

>Telling players the basic rules necessary to play the game counts as spoonfeeding.
Not him but if your game actually needs to tell the player what to do rather than showing them what to do through basic level progression, your game is already poorly designed from the get-go.

I love how we shat on MN9 for forcing players to use a crouch dash just to progress through the electricity stage but for Grimwah, it's suddenly acceptable to kill players for shit that they had no way of knowing about before it was too late.

Am I being memed right now?
>inb4 HURR MN9 ISN'T AN RPG
The point was the fact that the game is punishing you for information that you had no way of knowing about until it resulted in a total party wipe.
>>
>>386238198
You can play with less characters but the game doesn't scale for that as far as I'm aware so it'd probably end up being impossibly difficult.
>>
>>386238198
You can play with as few characters as you want but naturally the game becomes more difficult the less people you have, especially since there's no manual yet and it's hard to optimize your party. I'm currently playing with 6.

"There will be" doesn't help me now, and the game shouldn't have been released without a means of figuring out how shit works in the first place.
>>386239858
In any rogue-like, there's a command that allows you to see every possible command in the game.

In the souls games, there's a description of what each stat does and how it affects your character.

Yet in this game, you're just supposed to waste your time until you end up reaching a brick wall and just restart your entire adventure from scratch?

If this were any other game, it would get CRUCIFIED over this.
>>
>>386239984
What do you think about the game so far? Having fun? Have you got a lot of bugs or crashes?

>>
>>386240036
>You are just supposed to restart when you hit a brick wall.
Yes every single old dungeon crawler is exactly like this, you had to find out what stats and classes were good through trial and error and the manual never told you what arbitrary abilities are actually useful in endgame.

LGR will probably review it at some point just because it can play on ancient PCs and has an amazing backstory. The Steam page will be a warzone for the foreseeable future though.

I had a few crashes right after launch when opening the character sheets, but Cleve patched that pretty quickly. Haven't had any bugs or real issues since then.
Other than just not having any idea what a lot of the skills and stats really do there's only a couple things I dislike, the inventory system being a single line to scroll through that very quickly becomes incredibly cluttered is probably the main one. The balance doesn't seem all that great either, there's encounters that are piss fucking easy and gives ridiculous amounts of exp and then you fight a couple bugs that are nearly immortal and tear through your front line like butter and only get like 12exp each.
Overall I've been having a lot of fun with it so far though, I wouldn't call it amazing or genre defining or anything, but it's a solid game so far in my opinion.
>>
unusualcook is streaming the game again, if you would like to watch.

I've made exactly two posts. I made them because even as an outside party to your arguement, you pissed me off with how willfully stupid you were being. Many people feel the UI is a convoluted mess and the game is completely lacking in basic information that a game like this needs, and that any real game has, usually int eh manual. I wouldn't call expressing that opinion shit posting, if anything what you're doing is shit posting. You are making intentionally retarded arguments like "show me the part of the manual where it lists dump stats" when, unless you're mentally challenged, you know that's not what people were talking about. So you're either mentally challenged or pretending to not get the point of people's posts. Either way you're the shitposter not me buddy boy.

>nope
You'd get a hefty manual describing the lore, all the monsters, spells, and then there would always be one vital thing that was always omitted. You see, you'd always have some other bloke working on the manual during full production process, and he was sure to miss something. Find the old Fallout 2 manual. During whole thing there is never a single mention how to enter the city from overmap. I nearly flung the thing into a wall as I discovered it after a day of trying.

>Everyone and their mother can play bard's instrument (the SAME bard's instrument on the same turn) from the general inventory, thus spamming sleep and charm 8 times per turn. As in superdemo. Again.
>Berserking is exploitable because the game memorizes last actions. Meaning, when you activate berserk, you get crazy and start attacking everything not hidden, but being berserk pretty much doubles your damage. You end the fight, you sleep of the madness - and you can attack with berserking attacks in all the subsequent fights (as last memorized action), provided you don't do any other actions (such as using a potion or defending), without the madness. This also leads to both weapon skill and berserking being leveled like crazy.
>Sage gets 2 spells on getting second level, 3 spells on getting third level, n spells on getting the nth level. IF you get the corresponding spells immediately on levelup. If you cancel and do it from the character screen afterwards, he would get 4 spells after levelup to level 2, 5 spells after levelup to level 3, n+2 spells after levelup to level n. Actually this thing also pertains to all the other casters. As it was in superdemo. Again.

That is not to mention the others plenty of reviews talking about the game. I'm sure if you go through the entirety 104 reviews you may find 2-3 other reviews with 10% approval saying "Cleve is meanie poopoohead" as proof of a vast NeoGAF conspiracy to keep the man down, good luck with that.

Also, since in its current state the combat is a buggy exploitable mess, the only other perspective one could have regarding this game, is that of it being a first-person inventory-based adventure/puzzle game (backtracking-with-McGuffins-galore). Viewed as such, this game is pretty, well, it's pretty competent, I guess, but hardly more than just pretty competent. Also, exploration is pretty shit due to Detect Secret handing everything to you on a silver platter, due to which the majority of the exploring boils down to monotonous 100%ing of maps.

>>
>>386243586
Actually, I think, I get it. I get, at least to some extent, what was bugging me about this game since the superdemo.

It's a fucking first-person Deponia, where everything leveling/combat related serves as a GIANT FUCKING ANCHOR tied to your leg with a chain thicker than said leg, just to slow you the fuck down as much as possible.

And, I mean,

I mean, if I wanted to play fucking Deponia, I would've motherfucking played fucking Deponia. Without all the friction associated with the leveling and combat systems, which are, in their current state, just gigantic timesinks and nothing more than that.

The words about 600 hours are also starting to make sense. It's not like this game has THAT much content (well, BUNDLE-Z.RSF being 65 megs is kind of a giveaway as well). It's just that you are made to crawl through it as slowly as it gets.
