While Ghibli's movies are pretty, they're ass at making adaptions. They don't change things up just enough to make them work as animations (if they're not original properties), they change everything up. Kiki's author hated the movie. Ursula Le Guin didn't dislike Howl's Moving Castle but she said it wasn't her story.
