It loses the "small town" rural feel if the beginning. I love this as it feels like Ness is really moving around the world but I get where you're coming from. Have you played Mother 1 or Mother 3? Those are a bit more simple in their locations. In Mother 1 the entire game is rural "America" and in Mother 3 the entire game is focused on a small village, each townsperson is unique and you see how the village and it's people change.

Yes I'm a fan of the series. Strangely enough, I enjoyed my time in Mother 1 (I played Earthbound Beginnings when it released on WiiU) moreso than Earthbound despite a lot of the convoluted logic and backtracking.
Something about that first game made me enjoy my time and while I did use a guide as, like I said, very convoluted, but that didn't take away from my experience. Mother 3 I play once a year and I enjoy that each time.
It might just be that "small town" feel as you said. It was probably a subconscious feeling rather than one that I could feel myself.

I agree with losing the small town feel of it, but honestly that was one of it's charms, I think. There's a theory around here that EarthBound is actually subtly a reflection of maturity and life, with the earlier towns being childhood, Threed being loss of innocence, Fourside through Scrabia being a college-like journey of self-inflection and worldyness, with everything beyond that being adulthood and learning responsibilities. I'm not 100% sure if I agree with that theory or not, but I can certainly feel the tonal shift as the game progresses onwards like that. Fourside always blew my mind away as a kid first playing this because my mind hadn't experienced the "downtown" feeling that fourside has, living mainly in a rural area myself. In fact, I can see why a lot of hipsters liked it. It sort of romanticized the downtown/college/hipster lifestyle, and frankly I never really experienced it.

Mother 3 had an absolutely god-awful ending that would've given M. Night Shamylan a boner. Including the rushed plot bomb just before the end. And the several plot holes. And the director who's 110% positive that he'll never do another video game and will probably die before he could even try.
