I just played this for the first time today and it's fucking hard. Castlevania 1 was tough but I managed to get through it just by sheer determination but Castlevania 3 is another beast entirely. I found Syfa and Alucard to be too weak while Grant's wall climbing has been useful in skipping a lot of obstacles. Now I'm really stuck though. I'm up to a boss where a ghost revives three previous bosses; basically a boss rush. I don't understand how to deal with the mummies effectively, although I can kill the cyclops without getting hit once but I haven't done it for this part of the game yet. Either way, I feel totally unprepared for whatever the third coffin might hold and I can't get to the boss without losing significant health along the way. What bums me out the most is that this is a long fucking level and that stupid section with falling blocks slowly building a tower you have to climb takes forever. I really can't this part of the game anymore.

Any advice? Is there a pot roast on the way to the boss that I'm missing? Is there an alternate path I should take? It looks like I'm in Dracula's basement so it doesn't seem like there's an option for route. Should I start over and pick up Syfa or Alucard, or am I ok to stick with Grant?

Rondo is excellent but it's a very close second behind Bloodlines. Any Castlevania fan who's never played Bloodlines needs to stop what they're doing and play it right away. It's not as hard as Castlevania 3 but it's not braindead like Super Castlevania 4; it manages to strike an excellent balance and it's fun as hell to play. The unique setpieces and gimmicky levels help place it just above Rondo, and the alternate player character is better than Rondo's little girl.
>>
>>386207460
I mashed the ever-loving shit out of that game when it released. Carrie's magic homing missiles made her campaign far too easy. Yeah the camera and controls were wonky as fuck, but the game was aight by me.

If skipping obstacles is what you want, Alucard is who you should be rolling with. Down and B lets you transform into a bat and you can skip through entire floors. It uses hearts, so once you get alucard, it's best to use him for platforming while using Trevor for bosses. It'll kick your ass the first several times you play it but you'll get used to it.

She's literally an easy mode version of Richter. She does less damage but she also attacks much faster and has great range. I think it's easier to jump as her too? I could be wrong; it's been years since I've played Rondo on the PSP. Anyway, she's not bad at all but compared to the spear wielding dude (chick?) from Bloodlines, there's just no competition.

>>386208240
>It also has some damn good tie in's with Bram Stoker lore
I still think that was such a strange and unnecessary decision but I gotta give Konami credit for pulling it off well.
>>
>>386208329
Whip the mummies bandage projectiles, that's about all you need. It was the easiest part of the boss rush for me.

Oh, for fuck sake. I thought I had to pick up a power up, similar to Syfa. Thanks anon, I'll be sure to give this another shot then.
>>
>>386205468

That's not Symphony of the night
>>
>>386207323
you can cheese most bosses with holy water
the mummies are all about dodging and jumping in different angles while you rush them down, a good whipping in key spots and moments can take a big chunk of their health while also taking the projectiles
Third one is a big demon that just jumps around, it's really easy compared to the other ones.
This is also where the game starts to get REAL bullshit, specifically the semi final boss which is a ball busting piece of shit unless you cheese super hard or glitch it out and the semi final stage where you ALWAYS start at the pure beginning of the stage on the NA version just to make the stage even more of a pain in the ass.

If you REALLY just can't do it, use save states on the closest checkpoint and go from there, while the game loses some difficulty in doing it, a lot of that difficulty is gameplay expanding shit for older games, if you just CAN'T do it there's no reason to get frustrated at the game and end up dropping it even if a lot of people are against this.

As a plus, grant is considered the strongest one since a lot of lives and roasts are in places that the majority can't reach while grant high mobility can do anything alucard does without sacrificing a million hearts per second
>>
>>386208662
I'm really bad at that but if it's as easy as you're making it sound then I'll give it another shot.
>>
>>386208856
Symphony is good but Aria and Dawn's mechanic of absorbing enemy souls puts it a place above. Aria and Symphony have an equally good castle to explore while Dawn's is the weakest of the three, in my opinion. All three games are excellent though.
>>
>>386208868
Cant you camp on a ledge and attack when theyget close? Was this before or after the hydra boss? I recently played this game too, im stuck on the waterfall level right after the grim reaper. Shits insane
>>
>>386209071
Symphony's mood makes it my favorite, though it is very much a blueprint for the rest of the metroidvania games
>>
>>386207216
Wait is that supposed to be one of those giant, alternate-dimension torso-jelly monsters? Don't remember which SCP, but it's an old one.

aria's music just isn't up to part and while dawn is, it's also inferior to aria gameplay and art wise.

>This is also where the game starts to get REAL bullshit
Yeah, I've noticed the ramp in difficulty already. I started it the day after I finished Castlevania 1 and I was put off by how easy it was, until I realized that it's a much larger game too. Once I reached the Alucard boss fight, I could see the game starting to ramp up hard but Grant allowed me to skip a good chunk of the obstacles.
>grant is considered the strongest one since a lot of lives and roasts are in places that the majority can't reach
I've noticed this too. I've gotta several pot roasts and 1ups thanks to him. I wish switching characters didn't have that annoying animation but it's not so bad either.

I'll be sure to give it another try sometime. If worst comes to worst than I'll use save states but I really don't want to; it'll always linger in my mind that I never truly beat the game.

I tried that but the bandages can reach me too. Sometime my whip will hit them but other times I'll just barely miss and the bandages still get me. It felt pretty 50/50, but maybe my timing's bad. It's probably after the hydra boss; I fought a hydra in some sewer system but I gave up and restarted. I'm in the second part of Dracula's castle, but I still seem to be in his basement. I am not at all looking forward to facing Death; he was brutal enough in the first game. I still can't believe I defeated him but a stray scythe still killed me before I could tough the orb, and that fucking happened twice. That guy showed no fucking mercy.

Death isn't supposed to show mercy.
>>
>>386209264
I'll give you that. The story in Aria was cool but the storytelling in Symphony was great. The plot was rarely forced on you and moved at a solid pace. Moments like Alucard's flashback were the perfect balance of overt and subtle; it gave you just the information you needed to understand what was going on. Also, Aria's story got really fucking anime, and I don't just mean in the artwork. Stupid little plot twists like "I was Alucard all along and we're actually part of the Anti-Dracula Defense Force" were a bit much for me. Where the fuck is my 1999 game, Konami? It better be a classic Castlevania style and not that shitty Lords of Shadow bullshit. Fuck you.
>>
>>386209674
What SCP?
>>
>>386210095
This is one of the better tracks so at least there's that, but Castlevania 3 is so hard that you'll start to hate the music due to how often you'll hear the same fucking song. I think Castlevania 3 also re-uses it's own tracks more often than the first game, but it's a bigger game too so I guess it's a little bit excusable.
>>
>>386210095
I just listened to this and the Famicom version back to back. Holy fucking shit, it's a good god damn night and day difference. It's almost upsetting how poor the international version is in comparison.
>>
>>386210208
I thought I was playing this game to have fun. Clearly, I thought wrong.
>>
>>386210357
> It better be a classic Castlevania style and not that shitty Lords of Shadow bullshit
It could be a great mix of classicvania like rondo of blood next step and metroidvania rpg elements, like just show which pits are safe to fall in and which ones are instant death and shit like that.
>>
>>386210096
I tried this at first too but I'm too much of a bitch. The game is obviously designed with the different characters in mind to help out with certain obstacles but if you're a boss then you can make do solo.
>>
>>386210790
For sure, that could work. I feel like Rondo and Bloodlines have been the most advanced of the classic style, each in their own ways. They tried to do something with that 2D Lords of Shadow game but I was really unimpressed with the demo.
>>
>>386207323

>>
>>386211118
That makes no sense. Give it another try; CV1 is a cakewalk compared to CV3. The Dracula final boss fight even has it's own permanent check point that resets you there after a game over, unlike the masochisim of CV3. Look up some pot roast locations if you have to; it might be what you're missing out on to get through those tougher sections.

It's important to remember that many older games were designed around players using guides, either dedicated strategy guides or magazines. You would have an extremely difficult time finding anyone who beat Zelda without some kind of outside information.

That being said, I believe Castlevania doesn't need it but there's no shame in looking for help. Back then, you would ask friends at school. Now days, there's the internet. Pros and cons for both, but that's the world we live in now.

The game came with a guide, it was literally meant to be played with one. Without a guide the game becomes a 'walk into wall with candle' simulator.

"Mosesvania" is decent, but totally incomplete. It's pretty crude and old. I'd like to see him go and remake/finish it. All the songs are great, but there's like 4 of them. Most of the music is re-used in Pharoah Rebirth, the sequel.

Pharoah rebirth is a more complete package, but it plays less like Castlevania. Combat feels more liek Shantae with the hair attack thing. You can do that whip spin like in Castlevanias though.
