I just played my first game of Blade, and I must confess that it feels very... luck-based. Can I ever do anything interesting with these cards like win money or items, or is this exclusively a kill-time-on-train sort of deal?

That being said after beating all 3 of my train-buddies I came up with a quick set of tips that I can follow to (usually) win:
>save one lowbie-card for your last card, that allows you to play Bolts and Mirrors right up until the end
>draws are pointless and unless you have more (pretty high) cards left, you don't want to draw ever
>the AI is pretty aggressive with their bolt/mirror meme-shit and will often waste a ton of them early, when they do so, just keep them in check by playing cards that put you 1 point above them or other minor cards

Are these shit-tips for a Blade player? Got any of your own?

Still in chapter 2 on ng nightmare the 3rd.
I played fc ng+ nightmare just to get a max bp carryover, but damn, new game nightmare is pretty tough.
Every battle is dangerous, especially with 3rd's new turn modifiers.

I wouldn't say it's as good as the Liberl or Crossbell games, but it's still pretty decent overall. The overall worldbuilding and plot are just as good. Gameplay is simplified a lot, that's either a positive or negative depending on how you look at it. Where things take a dive are characterization and setting.

Bonding system means that a lot of characterization is will be centered around a character's relation to Rean, rather than themselves or other characters. On a first playthrough, you can't even access all of them unless you cheat engine it, so you'll miss out on a lot of the main cast's development. And that's skipping out on how Rean is such a bog standard LN-tier MC. The general setting, at least for the first game, is centered around the equivalent of high school students going on field trips around the nation, albeit that always coincidentally stumbles upon a big overarching conspiracy.

You will have a better appreciation of the worldbuilding and lore if you play Sky first. It's not absolutely *required*, though. I know some people played Coldsteel first and went back and played Sky later. It's just the Trails series builds upon each game and there's an incredible detail to npcs and lore. You'll bump into characters from Sky and Crossbell in Coldsteel, and you'll run into storylines that were planned several years ago. It's Falcom's forte.

Here's an odd question: will MC get better? I'm only on chapter 2 thus far.

I like his character, and he doesn't seem to be as edgy as I'd thought he'd be (at least not yet).

The problem is he's not really impressing me in combat.

The only stat he really seems to have on his side is Speed, and that's outdone by Fie. Laura outdoes him in damage-per-hit and Gaius is a better tank, while both staff-wielders seem to be better casters.

And as a jack-of-all-trades Alisa seems more well-rounded and she's got great weapon range.

Does MC ever come into his own in battle? As it stands right now I feel that it's the rest of the group carrying him...

The fun in Trails comes from everything taking place in the same world. There's a lot of speculating about the next game, replaying games to find little hints about what might happen next, and just generally paying attention to dialogue. There is a fuckton of dialogue. Normal is somewhat easier than FC Normal.
Hard is somewhat harder than FC Normal.
Nightmare is somewhat easier than FC Hard.
If you've played through the 3rd you can probably handle Nightmare, and you can definitely at least do Hard comfortably. Normal is a waste of time unless you're genuinely new to the series.

Let's talk about the Legend of Heroes franchise and how its the biggest scam in JRPG history.

If you played Trails in the Sky(as many did) then you'll notice one thing first and foremost: ITS FUCKING BORING!
Dialogues are boring, combat is boring, world is boring and the engine itself is just one step ahead of RPG maker.
"Fans" try to tell you that its one of the best written JRPGs out there. My ass it is! Its so cliche and standard its the quintessential JRPG trope. All the cliche characters and cliche events are in there to a point in which it feels you've played the game already. And the game does just that and nothing more.

And it gets worse: Trails of Cold Steel. You may think that this is a different game - but no it isnt. In fact, it has the EXACT SAME QUESTS! right off the bat and the EXACT SAME LOCATIONS thematically. The first other town you visit in Sky is the merchant town where you can buy anything. Guess whats the first town in Steel you visit is? Thats right: the merchant town where you can buy anything! And it continues that way.

Has there ever been a more uninspired and literally copy pasted JRPG than the LoH series? This is a rhetorical question because there hasn't been one.
