What are some games that are cool to play despite having lackluster gameplay?
Of all the MGS titles to use in that, you chose TPP?
>>386196890
Ground Zeroes didn't really have style. MGS4 was a close consideration.
>>386197032
4 is as style over substance as a video game's possibly ever gotten. It's the clear choice.
>>386196748
>Link's Awakening
Only one I disagree with, it had solid dungeons that are fun to play through.
>>386197032
>>386197204
Alright.
Link's Awakening removed.
Added MGS4
No memes, here's my list. I live them all
The Sexy Brutale
Fez
Headlander
Remember Me
Fire Emblem Geneology of the Holy War
Everything about it is great, except actually playing it.
>>386197447
None of the MGS games should be there. I don't know exactly what you count as "style" but MGS4 is all exposition over gameplay while MGSV is all gameplay over exposition. I don't see how you even draw the parallell. As much as I love P5 I agree with the inclusion. Journey might belong too (another game I like).
I question the reasoning behind Furi's inclusion. I thought the gameplay was quite solid
All of them.
>>386197895
this also viewtiful joe does not belong there either
>>386196748
Did the Hotel Dusk emulator problems get fixed?
>>386196748
>these games suck am I contrarian enough yet /v/
>>386197997
I played it a couple of years ago on desmume and the only problem I had was having to swipe the two switches at the same time, which can be done frame-by-frame. It also had a low framerate while walking around but that wasn't too hard to deal with.
>>386197447
Putting multiple games from the same series seems unnecessary and redundant.
>>386197769
>>386197193
Explaining my reasoning further, MGS4 isn't exactly gameplay heavy, no, but the gameplay that it does have is ripe with mechanics - psyche, stamina, camouflage, conflicts where you can choose to get involved or sneak pass. The rest of the game is pure cutscenes with loads of character and a shit ton of writing. That's substance, although it isn't gameplay. For me a game that puts style over substance would be something like P5, where the the gameplay itself is extremely barebones, but everything is decorated - from the flashy attacks and unique character reactions to the music and even the menus themselves. Another good example would be Flower, that relies only on its looks.

>>386196748
How can Transistor have lackluster gameplay? There were so many different combinations to the skills that it was incredibly varied and interesting trying new combinations to produce new effects.
>>386196748
stanley parable is the ultimate example. it's only a game because you can't do what it does in other mediums.
Paper Mario
Rayman
Alpha Centauri
Team Fortress 2
>Bayonetta
I'll give you Rising, but with Bayo you gotta earn feeling cool
>>386196748
>Hotline Miami 2
>Viewtiful Joe
>Parappa
>Psychonauts
>Lackluster Gameplay
>Bioshock Infinite
>Cool to play
Looks like it's another year in faggot jail for OP
>>386196748
MGSV is literally the only game in the series that has more substance than style. Other than that, I'd say Transistor and to a much lesser extend Bastion, along with any walking simulator obviously
>>386196748
>bioshock infinite (it has no style or substance)
>bayo
>MGR
>links awakening
>automata
>MGSV (shit level design and world design but the mechanics are fantastic
>furi
>style over substance
Don't do that
Added a new row. Last one is Devil May Cry 2
Every single game that Grasshopper has ever made. They're all fucking great but the gameplay is consistently mediocre. See: No More Heroes, Killer 7, Flower Sun Rain, Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer is Dead, Contact, Shadows of the Damned etc.
Every single game Taro had ever directed. Particularly Drakengard 1 and 3 have pretty awful gameplay but make up for it in other areas.
>>386198862
Terrible list because MGS 4, and 5 and Revengeance are all the exact opposite of what you're looking for. They have good gameplay marred by shitty story telling.
What about Gex?

>>386198862
Sure looks like a 3 on that dmc
>>386197967
You pretty much RED HOT ONE HUNDRED'd almost every boss
>>386198185
No one is saying these Games are bad
>>386196748
Half those games are only worth playing for the gameplay though?
>>386201993
They have interesting ideas for Gameplay, but don't go very far with those ideas.
Most popular indie metroidvanias like Ori and Hollow knight should be in.
From the games you posted I read this as "I don't actually take time to understand mechanics and only play through once on easy or normal"
Fucking kill yourself.
>>386196748
>adventure games on this list at all
I don't think you understand the point of an adventure game.
>>386196748
bayonetta doesn't have lackluster gameplay. it's button-mashy but it's fairly complex as far as that genre goes.
>>386204661
Go watch a Let's Play Killer7 blind playthrough. Look at how many people don't even finish the first level or ragequit right near the first Duplicator Smile.
People always switch to Garcian when they get to the first Harman Room. No one knows that they're supposed to shoot the bright yellow spots. No one knows to press Y to use abilities or charged shots.
>>386196748
every mainline mario game really.
>>386196748
>>386198467
>Rayman
Yeah fucking right
The first game will knock you on your ass
Hotel Dusk has a very good story and as an adventure game is quite solid
Killer7 is brilliant in it's well-rounded gameplay types.
Nier A Tomato is similar in that regard
MGR is very solid gameplay wise
Just too damn short
>>386198862
Just because you played Bayonetta, Revengeance, and Devil May Cry on easy babby mode and barely got through it by mashing the same combo like a faggot doesn't mean it's all style over substance. May as well put Ninja Gaiden there since mashing Izuna drop can get you through on the baby difficulty and you already have such shit opinions anyway.
>>386196748
what the FUCK has non-lackluster gameplay if PLATINUM titles are on your list
>>386198862
>Sleeping Dogs
ITT: Retards that don't know what "style over substance" even means.
Jet Set Radio Future.
That game is a fucking boring slog with no challenge and as soon as you get to the Death Ball sequence, the level design falls off a cliff.
>>386206262
He'd probably say Dark Souls or Monster Hunter because OP is your typical run of the mill /v/ faggot.
>>386206334
Main missions were okay. It was nice being able to interact with environment and use weapons in combat, but outside of main missions the game was very empty for a sandbox game.
Also going on ONE DATE with a girl meant you were committed to only her.
>>386196748
Deadly Premonition, I'd wager?
Ya'll niggas postin' in a bait thread
>>386206857
Did you... Read the list?
>>386196748
Anything by a western developer.
Everything they do is all about TECHNOLOGY and graphics over gameplay.
>>386196748
Weaponlord
>>386198467
>Team Fortress 2
You spelled Overwatch really, really poorly.
should people even bother playing Drakengard if they want to appreciate Nier more?
Rule Of Rose
>>386198862
>hotline Miami 2
>transistor
>bad gameplay
What the fuck are you doing anon
>>386198467
>Tf2
>Overwatch
>Tf2 is style over substance
OH I am laffen
>>386196748
might as well put every bioshock on there.
>>386210084
Hotline Miami 2 had bad designs. Maps too big and you can't look ahead. You're forced to use guns since there's so many fatties.
>>386206156
you're right. shame it won't get a sequel. I'd rather have that than another stupid bayonetta.
>>386211048
There's lots of lore in Bioshock, but it's hard to grasp it because there's 5 audio logs playing at once while dozens of enemies are screeching at you.
>>386207263
F.E.A.R. 2
>>386197742
do mobile games count?
>>386210817
There's not much to do in TF2 which is why people only play it for 20 minutes at a time
>>386212126
there's lore in infinite.
???, Furi is pretty much only substance. Only parts that could be considered fluff are the short walking segments in between that you can just put on auto pilot anyways. The game has like a singular core principle, and 98% of the playtime is doing that singular thing.
