Thaumaturge is the attack-mage.
Necro is better than Thaumaturge because their spells do damage and confuse or have secondary effects.
Wizard is more battle-utility but Sage Sage gets all the spells you need for map exploration.
Clerics are just healing. A Lycan-Cleric actually regenerates MP fast enough to use Cure Light Wounds every turn.

You need a lot of vitality to penetrate the monsters. If you're too tired, you'll have a much lower chance. Keep in mind that walking around a lot without resting reduces stamina/vitality. Also, attacks such as "slashing" work better against plants and "smash" are much better against worms. Disease causes paralyzation, blindness and irritation over time. So casting cure light condition to remove any of that is just a waste, everything will come back.

Classes are based on two things race/stats. If you have the right race and you roll a high enough stat roll you can start with a templar. Its not a good idea to do so because you will only have 4-5 hp with them instead of the possible 30-40 if you roll a beginner class
