When you think about it, Sonic CD is kinda like Sonic Adventure 2. As in, neither are particularly very good games objectively speaking, but they're both really memorable in their own rights, which is why they manage to resonate with a lot of people despite being heavily flawed.

With SA2, of course everyone remembers City Escape, E.G.G.M.A.N, Pumpkin Hill, the Knuckles rap songs, Live and Learn, FAKER, the Chao Gardens, etc. Likewise with Sonic CD, everyone remembers how it introduced Metal Sonic and Army, its crazy and off the wall level design/soundtrack/art direction in comparison to the other games, the animated cutscenes at the beginning and the end, and of course, Sonic Boom.

It's the easiest game in the series to complete, and second easiest game in the series to get a good ending on. Unless you're going for a pure generator run, in which case it's a messy clusterfuck of trial and error and memorization due to how finicky the time travel can be.

The 32X addon could have been used for so much more, but instead you get a Sonic 2 sequel with less content, a B-side soundtrack filled with voice samples, and special stages that are pretty unimpressive considering how cool Chaotix's special stages were. That and the stage gimmicks range from decent (collision chaos, stardust speedway), to awful (tidal tempest, wacky workbench).

Overall, Sonic 3K feels like a natural evolution of the sonic series, with a solid aesthetic, solid gameplay, solid music, and a decent attempt at an adventure plot in a new setting. Sonic CD feels almost like Sonic 2.25, and I feel like most of the development was going towards Sonic 3 at this point anyway, so it's left as a good but unremarkable title in a series of remarkable titles.

If Sonic CD does anything correctly, it's the aesthetic. Thankfully for all of us, Taxman agrees on this point.

As far as my limited spriting skills can take it at least. Tried to take the best from each iteration, with a couple of minor tweaks here and there. It's essentially a refined mishmash. You could argue for matching the original blue tone of 3K, and if you did you'd have to go back to using greys instead of greens for the hands and socks, since it goes hand in hand with the lighter palette of Mania.

The first and only Sonic game I played to completion was Adventure. On my Dreamcast. I have all the other games up to Adventure 2 (mostly via compilation discs and SA DX on my old GameCube), and I only played Sonic 2 on the PS3 SEGA compilation disc to unlock Phantasy Star (using my feet for the 2nd player to get to and beat the first boss was odd, but it worked without taking a hit once with either character).
