The only problems with the n64 controller are the small c buttons and the lack of lube on the analog stick that leads to it getting loose. Other than that it is an upgraded SNES controller.

Pressing the trigger on the back to shoot in Goldeneye was cool

The hardware manufacturers had no reason to think that people would want a D-pad and a control stick at the same time, as they were both had the same function: move your character around the game world. Even most PS1 games didn't use the D-pad for anything else.
