It seems for most strategy games complexity of rules is inversely proportional to the actual strategic depth. I watched Akagi, shilled it to my friends, bought a mahjong set and taught my friends riichi.
It's fun, we have betted real money a couple times but usually it gets too serious if we do and arguments about the rules happen. Which is a shame cause the game really has much more depth if you play with real dosh.

The difference is that poker is a game about people, not cards. It literally doesn't work if real money isn't involved. Mahjong can be played with bots or imaginary points, poker can't.

Poker is played with imaginary points and bots all the time. Look at play money on pokerstars and AIs on games like Poker Night at the Inventory. Mahjong is also mainly about learning the opponent and how to bait/bluff them. Again, I think you just don't understand the game.

Give it a shot sometime, if you like poker the only thing stopping you from liking this is a lack of wanting to learn. It goes even deeper than poker both in terms of the game itself and psychologically.

In an hour anyone can get the basics down. Build a hand out of 4 triplets (a set or a sequence) and a pair of the same tiles. You can win through either drawing your own final tile or by someone else discarding it onto the table when you're ready. There are three suits and two kinds of special suits, dragons and winds.

You get less points for easier hands (just a random collection of sets and sequences with one or two win conditions like a set of dragons), and more points for easier hands that fulfill harder conditions (straight, flush, all honours etc.) You can also bet on your own hand winning with a riichi after you only have one tile left to complete your hand.

With that much you can jump into an AI game and begin learning special hands and how to play at a more intermediate level.
