You don't need to fight the bandits.
What you do is you go into the place where the water is and search all the walls for hidden panels. One of those has the key to open the skull door.

Just beat the snake boss. Glad I had that staff of resurrection. Got lucky that I poisoned the snake and cursed it.
Wouldn't had beaten it if I hadn't gimped it first.

That's just about any dungeon crawler from those days to be quite honest. It'll be a bit better once we have the manual and actually know how the stats are used, but even then it won't change all that much. Those games were always super buggy and butt ugly, it's part of the charm, you figure out what the broken combinations are and then steamroll the game with them

Honestly, the main I bought this game was to pay for the many years of entertainment Cleve has already given me. If the game is remotely fun, it's just a bonus.

I especially enjoyed the time when nobody (myself included) believed the Australian Wizardry sequel Cleve and Mad Max actor Max Phipps worked on, Stones of Arnhem, was real. Let alone the tales Cleve told of how Phipps and his fellow homosexual boytoy filled it with penis anus monsters and filled the office bathroom with dildos and other assorted sexual paraphernalia.

Then years later, a liquidation auction of Sir Tech assets (verified real) revealed that Stones of Arnhem was real, as were all the penis anus monsters etc.

Sadly for the world I doubt his stories of the LA riots, golden retriever genetic expertise, melonhead plots, and the time a wicked she-devil who worked at an ice cream parlour tore out his heart and stomped on it will be similarly proven true.
