Not even defined, but just look at any genre and there is basically an 80% chance that the Japanese are completely crushing it unless you're some casual shiteater. Even then for party games you got early Mario Party entries and 100% OJ, which aren't boring as all fuck compared to typical western party games.

The west has produced less than three fighting game series worth giving a shit about, has produced literally zero good action games (closest thing being DmC which is laughably sad), only has Guitar Hero as its only notable rhythm game and even then Guitar Hero pales in comparison to the greats of its eastern peers. Japs are also responsible for tons of amazing puzzle games, and the best puzzle game America's produced was actually decades ago with Tetris. Tetris peaked with Grandmaster 3, but even then still manages to be inferior compared to shit like Puyo. And so on.

The Japanese even blow the west the fuck out at making western games. America stopped trying to give a damn decades ago when gaming became far more noticeably marketable towards easy to please normalfags that couldn't care less about anything even remotely relevant to artistic integrity and just want a cheap thrill. How anyone can take the vast majority of the western industry seriously anymore is beyond me. Fuck, the best thing to come out of here in the last several years is Killer Instinct bone, Witcher III, and Undertale, but I probably couldn't even name another 15 beyond that for this and last gen combined if it hasn't aged like piss.

Shit like Street Fighter 2, Quake 3, and whatever had competitive scenes and aspects to it, but the developers didn't make them in mind for the purpose of thousands of people to watch. With developers going "we want our game to be an esport" and then brute forcing its way into the scene with bloated prize pots, they ironically miss the entire point why certain games become esports in the first place.
