Dark Souls was such a step up from Demon's Souls it set expectations far too high. Epsecially for the first game in the franchise with a decent budget. Dark Souls II was the game they finally got the resources a game like this deserves where both Dark Souls and Demon's Souls were low budget niche games that suddenly had runaway success.

Dark Souls II then turned into a clusterfuck in development and much of the extra money doesn't show since most of the game had to be rebuilt from the ground up half way into development while the whole game and studio restructured itself leaving the final product uneven as fuck and with the noticeable visual downgrade compared to what was initially promised.

If there never was a Dark Souls and Dark Souls II somehow ended up coming out as exactly the same game in it's place it might even be considered great. But having Dark Souls as a frame of reference it can only be seen as an awkward stumble with some small gleaming moments of brilliance buried in the train wreck that was it's production. Luckily the story has a happy ending with Bloodborne coming out and being by far the best and most original game in the franchise finally surpassing Dark Souls.
