I bought one but ended up using my 360 controller anyway, in the end it doesn't matter what you use, but how long you keep practicing with it.

Can't go back to pad now
>>
>>386125275
Yeah. I have that fightstick actually. I'm transitioning over to the fightstick fulltime for the most part, but some games I just prefer pad.

Fightstick:
SNK Games
Street Fighter
Anime FIghters
Marvel vs Capcom 1/2

Pad:
Marvel vs Capcom 3
Tekken
Anything else

The FightStick really helps me for strict games like the ones SNK make. The older SNK games have some really tight execution that I just can't do on Pad consistent. Games after 2009 are more casual and make fightsticks somewhat nonexistent because of the execution barrier being lowered.
>>
>>386126515
If you use custom binds on tekken prepare to be looked down on. Not that you should let someone pressure you to play the "right" way because that's a scrub mentality.

>>
>>386126692
I do use them and I could care less what so fuck says. There are people who use them on stick too, especially in Street Fighter. Pros to be more specific. I remember a Viper player getting hate because he had a micro he used to do rapid seismos consistent on stick.

Hm, I don't use them a lot though. It's mainly for characters with weird move placement, like, having a move on Square and Circle (or a third button like Kasumi's Tiger/Taunt). And I used it for characters with EX moves. In Marvel I use it to wave dash and such.
>>
>>386125275
yes i own pick related
do all sticks feel this shoddily made ?
>>
>>386127083
Yeah I use custom binds out the ass on tekken. I have 1+2 3+4 1+4 2+3 bound on shoulder buttons and even have 3+4 bound on my right analogue stick so o can be more consistent with isw. (King is best waifu)
I was at a tourney and a really good player tried talking shit because I had button binds and he didn't (he was on stick) So I gave him my controller in a casual and bet he couldn't do a rolling death cradle first time. He couldn't do it at all.

How good are SereneLife sticks?
>>
>>386125275
I do. And I even switched the square gate for an Octagonal one

But the transition has been painful. I'm just an average player on pad, but I know someone worse than me when I see them.

Playing on a stick, I can't even beat a low difficulty CPU. It feels tremendously difficult to just go from pressing a punch to a kick (standard 8 button layout/mapping)

Maybe I need to rebind everything or some shit. I know people will just say "grind it out" but shit man, I'm just a dude trying to have fun and I already took hundreds of losses learning on a pad to get to an average level.

I only used a stick before in my life a few times when I was young in an arcade, but I really like the concept of having one for PC.
But when I look up the prices on some of these, it's really scary, especially since I don't know much about them AND I have to try them first since I might end up not even liking them.
Can I please get some recommendations and hopefully something not too expensive and beginner-friendly ? Thanks !

It'll be cheaper to mod the parts to modern sanwa, hori or seimutsu instead of buying a whole new stick with the same parts. It's very easy to do and cheap too. Of course if you want different box shape and design then I understand. Next time get a stick with a swappable face plate and you are good to go.

>>
>>386141910
To fight. More accurately, to fight correctly.

Fightan games are made for Japanese arcades first and consoles second. Arcades use sticks with square gates. It only makes sense to buy the equipment it was designed to be played with.

Sure you can "get by" with a standard controller, but that's like saying I can also write with my feet. It may technically get the job done, but it will never have the proper finesse or legibility as writing normally.
>>
>>386141768
Literally anything with sanwa parts and a quality PCB. If you're on a bit of a budget, either make your own from wood or whatever or get the mayflash that was mentioned earlier and replace everything with sanwa parts and a ps360+ (works on both ps and xbox, might be a better option now i don't know)

not really in the modern age. the only advantage that a stick really has is ease of negative edge inputs, and even then, controllers can do it even easier with some button remapping

There isn't really a fighting game since 1997 that's easier with stick. It has nothing to do with finesse or anything.
>>
>>386142087

>>
>>386142087

Weren't there two people in Top 8 at EVO who used controller? Smug is also one of the best players in America, scaring even Japanese players, and he uses a fucking Xbox 360 controller. It's really all about playing what you're comfortable with.
>>

They're still made with the principles of games that do, i.e., Street Fighter. Like what it's become or not, it set the standard for how almost all future fightans control with QCFs and DP motions.

I will never understand that. I specifically bought my first stick FOR Tekken 7. There are just too many up or down diagonals that you have to get out quickly and reliably for it to work well on pad. I have the Bone pad and it's shit for those inputs, but even my old PS3 one still gave me trouble. I get them almost every time on stick.

Don't go cheap, you'll just be wasting your money. Quality fight sticks are built to last, cheap ones will give out on your in a few months. That said it depends on what you mean by "cheap". RAP4s are $130-150 new, they're the basic entry model. There's no reason to put down $300+ on one unless you're going to EVO and even then it's largely overkill.

>>

>that you have to get out quickly
This is specifically the argument for playing tekken on a pad. A d-pad returns to neutral a lot faster than a sanwa stick, making k-backdashing and ewgfs and stuff a little quicker. Korean myoungshin sticks return to neutral much faster than a sanwa, lots of people prefer them for tekken and to a lesser extent other fighting games
>>

Is that why Koreans dominate the Tekken scene?

>>
>>386144128
there are 6 to 8 buttons to press on the right with strict timing. there's one joystick on the left. which one requires more precision? if you are messing up your directional inputs you are DEFINITELY messing up your buttons.
>>
I bought a fightstick for Skullgirls because my friends and I have been playing online and i'm sick of losing :(

Playing on a keyboard isn't that hard but my hands get tired and the keys are really stiff (MX Clears) so it's harder to execute combos. I'm getting better now with my QANBA carbon but the stick movement still kinda eludes me because the movements are so much more dramatic

Have a TE stick and built a hitbox. I prefer the hitbox so I just keep the stick around for when other people come over.
>>
>>386145968
well either way, it's going to be a transition for me because now my LEFT hand is going to be handling movements. I haven't seen many with the orientation like a keyboard. Also, anything more than a quartercircle/shoru seems hard as fuck to pull off on a keyboard, and I couldn't see a hitbox being any better.

It's fine though, I'm getting used to it more and more, I just need to practice with it a bit more.

NRS games are dominated by pad. Killer Instinct is also almost all pad. The best american SF players in the world currently use pad, and the best SF player in the world period plays on pad. Lots of anime players use pad.

It's literally just preference, moron. And this is coming from someone who uses an Obsidian.
>>
>>386146890
There's no point in updating it. There's only 2 brands that still make decent sticks these days... Hori, Qanba and that's it.

Qanba for Sanwa ($200 or more for Sanwa parts)
Hori for Kuro ($150 or more for Kuro)

These 2 brands also make the best budget sticks.

The alternative would be to go custom, which would be way more expensive unless you do it yourself.

>>

Just trickier for me because I've used gamepads all my life. It;'s basically typing so your fingers have to be more dextrous to really make use of them. But they are more precise than sticks.

snapins tend to be the more popular option but the retention clips snap over time if you're not careful.

>>
>>386149994
For me, as someone who likes to switch out buttons somewhat frequently, screw-ins are much better since the tabs on a snap-in wear out a lot when you remove it (it's not uncommon for the tabs to break on the first instance of removal).

That's the only reason though, and I'm not the guy you replied to.

There are some cases where you may want to hit up with your right hand. Once you get used to it you don't even think about it anymore.
>>
>>386125275

No, I'm neurotypical.
>>
>>386153170
Why do you think buttons are better than a joystick in your opinion?
>>
>>386153452
Comfy way to use up and it's press never held. 4 direction layout with your fingers only would not be as comfortable.
>>
>>386126692
Like binding 1+2 to r1 or something? Why is it looked down on?
>>
>>386154283
Because directional inputs are only digital and pressing a button is significantly faster than a stick activation. Give it time you'll be a fool to be using anything but a hitbox.
>>
>>386153452
Tell me which finger you use on PC to jump
>>
>>386153452
I wondered this too but I think it has to do with jump usually being less used than the others in most fighting games. Doing shit like a half circle just requires a drum of ring, middle, index finger rather than trying to get your thumb on the bottom button involved with the downward press. To me it adds better visual representation to quarter and half circles and other various motions. Other than 360s or down up charges there's not as many specials that utilize up. You tend to only jump once every once in a while as well whereas you may dash, move, and crouch far more often.
>>
>>386153170
I kinda want to move to a hitbox set up but I can never get double qcf down, with a stick it is just so smooth
>>
>>386139520
>he doesn't use his stick to play through bloodborne
Never again, that shit was absolute hell and I didn't even touch the chalices or most of the dlc.
>>
I got a really good price on one of these and decided to go for it. Not really gaga about the LEDs, but I don't hate them either.

>>

Because you have to your middle finger for both up and down. It will start getting weird doing full circles.

Keyboardfag here. Considering getting/making a hitbox. How well do they fare?
>>
>>386157364
I only play shotos and their ilk because I'm a scrub so it doesn't bother me.
>>
>>386157457
If you have been using a decent mechanical keyboard, the feel will be somewhat similar but you'll have to get used to the spacing of the buttons because it'll be farther apart than a keyboard.

I have this and it's been pretty good for two years now. Looking to buy a stick for my PS4 though since this isn't compatible. Any recommendations?
>>
semi-on topic but how the fuck do you use MAME? I've got a ps4 fightstick that would be great for arcade emulation but i can't into mame for the life of me
>>
>>386158185
Qanba has been putting out pretty good shit recently at decent prices. They might still be having a sale on some shit on qanbausa. How much cash are you looking to burn on one?
>>
>>386158527
I'm thinking up to 200 but I'm willing to go over a bit more.

Heard a lot of good things about Qanba Obsidian.

For 200 pick up a qanba obsidian or hori's equivalent stick, forget what it's called. Heard good things about the Hori but I can vouch for the Obsidian. Well built, comfortable, and stock parts that are perfect out of the box. I don't plan on modding it though and I'm not sure about how easy it is to do so, so you might want to check first if you're interested in slapping your waifu on there or something.

Fair enough. I never used anything else so I can't compare but I really like how sensitive they are.
>>
>>386125275
No because they're expensive and I probably wouldn't even use it that much.
I'd still like one though for the novelty factor.

It's different, but when you think of it as spacebar/jump, it helps. I used to do WASD as well but the main advantage with hitbox layout is that you have a finger in all 4 movement directions at all time, instead of moving your middle finger between up and down.

>>386154283
I don't think its objectively better, but key presses is all I know. I tried learning stick and it was just completely foreign. I could do everything but it just wasn't clicking.
>>
>>386153956
That's a nice anime mod. Where do you get those?
>>
>>386143584
is the Hori EX 2 really that difficult to mod?
>>
Is the obsidian worth it? I have eightarcs ivory stick from the ps3/xbox days. Not sure if the upgrade is worth it
>>
>>386125657
It depends on the character though. Some characters are definitely easier to learn on a stick, like Zato.
>>
>>386161773
Print your own artwork and buy the parts.

I got a SV4:TE from CEX for £50, works like a charm. Had to replace the stick gate to a hex, though.

Pads and sticks. The Dreamcast CvS1 pad is neat since it has its box with a bunch of cards featuring Capcom characters and their movesets.
