cRPG is a modification for Mount & Blade: Warband extending the multiplayer experience with an RPG-like leveling system and multiple game modes. Some of the various features include:
Persistent character stats
As you level up you can customize your characters by assigning points to attributes, skills and weapons. You can specialize on a specific class or go hybrid.
Hundreds of unique items
You can choose from hundreds of items in the shop which will allow you to create a unique look and make you stand out. Retiring a character allows you to pass on an heirloom - an improved item - to the next generation. All items can be traded on the marketplace with other players.
Clans
Being in a clan will automatically assign you and your mates to the same side in the battle and siege game modes. They come with an armoury to share items, a treasury to collect gold, a messaging system and the possibility to upload a custom banner (see unique pepe banner).
Strategus
This game mode brings the single player campaign online and allows you to compete in a virtual world with other players over land, goods and castles. The preparation and planning is played as browser game, the actual battles take place ingame.
Defend the Virgin
In this co-op game mode your team has to protect an NPC named Vivi. Each round consists of three waves of enemies and every round gets more challenging with tougher bots and hero npcs.

I played this years ago, and it's a great concept, but too late for anyone to get into.
When I was playing it, there were a handful of players with full black armor sets and maxed stats, and beating them was simply impossible.
It's fun RPing as a ninja or samurai, but everyone probably has black armor sets by now.

It can definitely be tough for new players coming into the game. The skill ceiling is high and many players have been honing their skills for years.
That being said, new players now start with 4 maximum upgraded items than can be exchanged into other items of their choice free of charge. This change was made to help new players keep up with some of the better geared players. New players can also get assistance in the form of gold!
XP has also been quadrupled most likely since you played to help new players coming in.
Additionally joining a clan with an armoury is a good way to access top tier equipment as a new player and clanmates are a great resource help you practice/duel to improve your skills.
Joining a clan will also put you on the same team as your clanmates allowing you to fight with veteran players and have a better chance of coming out of the round with an XP multiplier!

We are working on bringing back more EU players. Most likely what will bring EU back is the start of the next round of Strategus.

Was there ever any skill/ability in these online cRPG things that allow you to deploy with NPC units and having higher INT/CHA type stats at the cost of not having good STR/DEX stats allows you to deploy more and possibly better armed?

Only one game mode has NPCS in cRPG and it is cooperative against the AI. Players defend an allied NPC from waves of AI attackers.
The rest of the game modes are all human players and there is indeed a high level of skill.

Servers were down briefly a number of months ago when the previous devs moved onto a new project but a new team of devs brought the game back online in June!

You may need to use a shield or some high quality armour for the waves of crossbowmen in DTV (coop mod vs ai)
