We all know emulation helps save and preserve games and without it many old and obscure arcade games might have been lost forever. Well the same is true of many other games specifically anything with a major online component. Failed MMOs especially, if the company in question ever loses the source code it's as good as gone. Pic related, I'm sure many of you remember Tebula Rasa that failed MMO Richard Garriott was attached to. You know the one with the piles of unsold copies in the trash; if future generations ever want to learn about the pitfalls it faced and learn from its mistakes the only way to do it would be through blurry 2007 youtube videos.

That's the fate of online games unfortunately. And this is precisely why you should NEVER support any type of online authentication in single player games.
>>
fuck always online crap
>>

It's Tabula, you nigger.

It was a failed product and it got the fate it deserved. Now it's out there polluting the deep reaches of space with its shittyness.

No-one cares mate. End this cringe thread.

The tragic part is its not just the bad games like Tebula Rasa that are in danger of being lost. It's anything not actively supported that includes innovative games, influential games, and unique games. Games which are part of history are being lost. Game dozens of people spent months/years and millions of dollars making. Lost for all time, their failures and successes inaccessible to future generations.

When they look bad at online games they will never be able to play the games that came before to learn from them. Have you never played a game that you think is important that no one can now play because the servers are shut off and as such the game or that portion of it is unavailable?
>>
>>386122423
The one and only download I found for the full version of Axis Arena had been dead for a few months by the time I got around to it.
>>
>>386123142
if the online game was actually good, it will eventually get a server emulator. bad games never get server emulators.

>mmos lost forever

literally who cares, if you can't play an mmo with other people there's no point
what's there to "preserve"?

Did you not hear? MGO2 has servers again.

Goddamn that game was so hyped but was so shit.
Everything was a fucking bullet sponge.
>>
>>386122423
failed mmos deserve to stay in the graveyard.

>>386122423
I have the source code for Flyff, the only good MMO, so I'm worried.

What was tabula rasa like? I played the beta but between lag and confusing tutorial i dropped it. Think i only got in to beta because i was subbed to city of heros. Auto assault was pretty meh as well.
>>
>>386123323
That a very hopeful view, if only I could be such an optimist. Then again I live in a world where capcom lost the source code for Mega Man and Nintendo sells a rom of Super Mario Bros. with an iNES header they downloaded from the internet because apparently they didn't have the original on hand either, well that or they're just lazy and don't give a shit.

Even the good games don't get preserved, if you don't see the value in the preservation of bad games I'm not going to take the time to try to convince you they're important but you can at least care about the importance of preserving good ones.
>>
>>386123747
Shit can be emulated now though. It's not entirely lost.
>>
>>386123142
It's Tabula, you faggot.
>>
>>386123845
It's not emulated very well if I recall. Sound issues and stuff.

I never got to play Battleforge, and that game looked pretty interesting.

I know this pain. A game I put hundreds of hours into is already lost forever like tears in the wind for over a decade.

getting pretty close though from the looks of it

>What was tebula rasa like?
I don't know I never actually played it myself. Like I said the only way to experience Tebula Rasa now is via youtube videos. If you want to figure out why it was bad, how it played, what mistakes it made, you've only got second hand sources since you cannot play Tebula Rasa anymore.

>>

This is actually an important topic you ignorant cucks.

Video games as an art form need to be preserved. Film has many databases and registries throughout the world where prints and original footage is protected. We need something similar for games because people WILL be studying/analyzing them in the future.
>>
>>386124415
stahp
>>
>>386124720
As long as you "downloaded" it and had it in your account history you can still download it, you just have to proxy a certain way so it grabs the content header properly.
I have P.T. on my PS4 Pro and I only bought a PS4 with the Pro.

What the fuck was Battleforge?
>>
>>386125032
An RTS card game hybrid removed from history by everyone's favorite EA.
>>
>>386125176
Thanks EA

Although, I don't think we can really blame EA for something that literally ever developer/publisher large and small does. There is no money in it and no law tells them they have to so they don't do it. The only reason you might preserve your old games is to bundle them up and sell them to the nostalgic 20 years in the future and with the emulation community doing all the heavy lifting for them, well, why would they even bother?
>>
>>386123747
if you have a cfw or ODE enabled PS3, you can easily download the pkg file for scott pilgrim from google and install it and then play it.
>>
>>386124743
offline games are always preserved. even if it only has a limited disc release, someone out there online has made a iso copy.

the only games that are truly lost forever are dead MMOs that never got server emulators because too difficult or no one bothered.
