He's got a loyal following, but he definitely wouldn't qualify as overrated. Beyond that I feel that we haven't seen quite enough of what he has in store to qualify him as a hack. His recent game ripped off wholesale a bunch of concepts from his last one, and you can either forgive that as him trying to reach his themes to a wider audience or condemn him for being unoriginal, but if noting else he's shown that he fucking loves playing around with what people expect, and now the Near A Tomato has reached a decently large critical and casual audience it seems hard to believe that he would keep with the same shit save extreme pressure from the publisher. and if the publisher has half an idea of why he does so well they'll give him plenty of slack in the leash

Also ALL of Taro's games have had multiple routes, this is nothing new. I think your observations are pretty dull and amount to nothing more beyond similar themes and character archetypes.

NieR + Grimoire NieR is a pretty good Jap-consoletard analogy (especially in Replicant version) to Spec Ops: The Line (released before Spec Ops: The Line), and Drakengard3 is a GREAT absurdist comedy, which goes, quite inventively, out of its way with its jabs to the very notion, that a game where you slaughter several thousands of human-like opponents, still can be perceived as something at least somewhat serious on at least some level.

Both, of course, rely on screwing with the "4th wall" very, very heavily.

Drakengard 1 though is an edgelordian piece of attention-whoring crap, which has nothing more to it, than trying to shock the player/viewer (think "Srpski Film"). And Tomata is basically Taro's attempt to create a "serious", "immurshive" game without almost any jabs directed to the player himself. And, well, it's God-awfully tired and derivative, although the ending to SOME of its side-quests are pretty okay, and do create some reminiscence about Taro's earlier games. Still, in my personal opinion, Tomata certainly isn't worth (and by a very long shot too) the time, which is needed to complete it, all the side-quests included.

So, yeah, I think that he took crucial part in the creation of two legit good, artistry-wise game. Those "games", though, are ultimately much better off on youtube (and, at a lot of places, on 2x playback speed) than on one's home console.

Nope, Drakengard 1 is tedious and has a bit of bullshit but its actually a really memorable experience. Never played 2 because no Taro. 3 was the worst Taro game and the framerate is ass but its still entertaining. The DLC is incredibly overpriced, only consider getting Two's or One's.

I bought Automata at full price because I like to encourage some kind of innovation or uniqueness in the industry. Game was pretty good to boot.
