there is no scary horror game
Alright
>>386106537
But there are many horrible scary games.
amnesia: the dark descent is scary
>>386106537
Entirely untrue. The problem is that horror is actually hard to set up because it requires getting into a player's head, seeding paranoia and discomfort, and then slowly letting that build.
Jumpscares on the other hand are easier, braindead, always get a quick reaction and are funnier for streamers, so the equally braindead game makers just load up a product with them and call it quits.
I mean hell look even at DS1/DS2 if you want horror and that shit had guns and the ability to fight back. I call you a filthy liar if when in DS2 they show Ishimura to you and say "Guess what shitlord, you're going baaaaack" you didn't clench your cheeks with the force of a thousand suns as the PTSD came rushing back. Then instead of instantly slamming you with bullshit, they slowly rise up the tension as you mutter "Fuck this fuck this seriously fuck this", spring the bullshit, then immediately drop back to suspense.
>>386106537
RE7 freaked me out the first time through. Everything about the kids' quarters was dread.

SOMA and Penumbra Black Plague freaked me right the fuck out
>>386107912
I was JUST about to come in here to post this.
I'm not opening that vid tonight, though. I'm the only person in the apartment.
>>386108149no you are not
Problem is most horror games have a gimmick which only works one or two times before you get the mechanics down and the game ceases to be scary. It's hard to pad things out over several hours.
>>386106537
True
>>386106537
You wanna know why they aren't scary? Because you have no fear of death. Death or physical hurt is why we are scared.
In a game you can pause, look away, and even just turn it off and you know this. No actual fear of death because it's just a game and you know this subconsciously.
VR games will fix this. in VR you can't turn your head to look away for realsies, you just stay in the world, engrossed in it's plot. When they get more advanced I can almost guarantee they will scare you, because you will have that fear anon.
>>386108236

I have to admit, I never really played any horror games beside the old Silent Hill games on consoles. What are some good PC horror games to get into?Maybe ones that don't spoop me too much? I'm not into FPS and first person perspectives always spook me.
>>386110730
is the fun factor worth all of the stress of bein terrified?
>>386111063
Yes, of course
After completing Amnesia I don't have fear anymore.
>>386111057Alan Wake
>>386109909
This. Even things in non-horror games that could be perceived as jumpscares like an enemy attacking me from behind scares the shit out of me.
>>386111485
Amnesia is the least scary game that company made
>>386111759
What other games did they make?
>>386112024
Penumbra series and Soma.A Machine for Pigs doesn't count
Justine is DLC-tier short but I almost shat myself a few times playing it
horror games are scary.
>>386112272
I thought Soma was pretty shitty actually and Catherine was an infuriating stupid bitch.
>>386112387
>I thought Soma was pretty shitty actually
why though
It was far from flawless but I liked it a lot
I've always been interested in abyssopelagic stuff so there's that
>>386112498
Oops I meant pretty shitty horror-wise, I liked the plot idea as it had a lot of potential but it felt like a long walking simulator that didn't scare me at all. The conclusion was disappointing though.

Why did they think this was a good idea?
>>386106537
I love spooky atmosphere and monsters, What i hate is obnoxiously loud sound effects meant to startle you.
>>386118297
Because they were aiming at the streamer audience
>>386108135
I actually found Black Plague to be kind of a let down
I played it after Amnesia, and maybe it spoiled me.
I mean I had a fuckin' great time with the whole Penumbra series but it felt more like psychological thriller than a horror game.
>>386107912
>9:10
Love how in vids like this you can see the player jolt the mouse. Like in this one https://youtu.be/oR6WBGKw0MA
SS2 was spooky sometimes.
>>386119461
The scariest thing in that video is the graphics.

>>386110497
But it was red. Are you colorblind?
>>386120173
Pretending graphics that ugly don't ruin the atmosphere and immersion, which are essential to horror games, is literally delusional.
>>386120293
Nigger I first played it like 2 months ago. Nobody cares about graphics, just art style. You're obviously 10 if you think thats bad.

Playing this outdated shit when we have genuinely amazing horror experiences now like Amnesia and Soma is really sad. I feel bad for you more than anything. You don't know how great horror games can be. You should try them, you won't even want to look at that old game after that. It's wonderful here in modern times, feel free to join us.

>>386120556
I don't want to just walk around while spooky shit happens, those are the worst horror games. Ooh you have limited oil in your lantern, deep gameplay
>>386120612
>don't talk shit about games you haven't played
Not wasting my time playing bad games is a sign of good time management. That's a good thing. Please, actually do try the newer stuff. There are some good recommendations in this thread. It'll bring a whole new understanding of the potential of this genre.
>>386120713
Exactly my problem with most horror games. They're just walking simulators with no real gameplay except for ZOMG RUN!!! and mediocre tl;dr plots
The sounds the enemies in SS1 made always spooked the fuck out of me
>>386120823
I played Slender the Arrival once bevause some faggot gifted it to me and I was just walking around for like 30 minutes with nothing to do, and I started getting really annoyed because I was so fucking bored then every few minutes "ooh spooky man" but he would never do anything. I kept trying to run up to him and let him kill me and nothing would ever happen. God damn that game pissed me off. Can't believe it was so popular.
>>386107912

the fatal frame games are also very scary
Scary how? Picture related gave me somewhat of a nightmare, but I wouldn't call it scary outright. More like creepy and disturbing.
Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth, during the flying polyp part, scared the absolute shit out of me.
>>386121164
If I played a horror game with someone and they reacted like this I'd kick their ass
Silent Hill is pretty scary.
>>386108963
>do people not keep their spare toothbrushes in the closet?
Imagine being on this site this long.
>>386121410
The scariest part for me was when they changed shit up that you thought you knew. Like you'd go in a bathroom, then come back out and you don't realize you're somehow on a diffetent floor. Or you go outside and a road you walked on is now a hole. You'd go up some stairs and now theres a solid wall where the exit was supposed to be.
>>386121234
>>386121238
Funny how time changed perception. 8 years ago streaming didn't exist much and so this was considered funny, not cancerous.
But I guess you wouldn't know that, underage newfags.

>>386106537
Sure if you're a jaded normalfag who goes into each horror game with a bravado and something to prove. If you're playing with 40 lights on in your house, with 4 friends surrounding you, with an attitude that you're not gonna let the game scare you so your ego doesn't get attacked then yes nothing will ever scare you and the genre isnt for you.
>>386121596
>underage
The thing is we grew up. Obviously you haven't if you think this is funny.
>>386120494

I know the video, I saw it to its entirety when it released due to people like you linking it. I bet you think Penumbra was scary too.
>>386121983
I'm not someone who finds horror games not scary in general, but I honestly never thought of the classic RE games as particularly terrifying. They're tense due to the survival aspect, and sometimes creepy, but never really scary.
>tfw unironically find Outlast a great horror game
Not like it's "scary" or anythingI hardly get actually "scared" by things now, be it movies or games, I prefer -enjoying- them cause I'm a massive horror fanbut what they really nailed was the atmosphere, seriously it was fucking great. Also liked the level design and the pretty immersive gameplay. The only minus was shitty AI and annoying braindead "enemies". Btw Whistleblower was my personal DLCOTY. Like, holy fuck.
Didn't play Outlast 2 tho cause the abscense of the asylum setting was a big turn-off for me. Not really sure if it's worth it at all.

Before it was patched I only managed to get through the first night because I figured out it was possible to win by doing literally nothing the entire night.I watched the computer from across the room and the sound off just in case.
>>386107912
I downloaded it. Got spooked once, now i can't bring myself to play it again.
>>386106537
The scariest games tend to not be "horror" games.
>>386109909
The problem is that horror games tend to only be temporarily scary.
Either your character becomes more powerful and is able to handle the threats more easily, the "mystery" of the horror around you is revealed to you and is no longer scary, or you just manage to analyze the way the game functions enough for it to become predictable.
>>386107912
They should really remove that flashing white light and the weird loud noise at the start of the encounter. It just breaks immersion and makes it less scary.
>>386106947
You also have to be in the right mindset to play a horror game. There's a lot of people out there who say shit like OP but when you ask them if they immersed themselves in the game they go "lol what? I played it with by buddies in a well lit room. We were joking around and drinking beer too!"
If you never immerse yourself in a horror game it stands no chance of scaring you.
>>386106537
The west can`t into horror.
The asians can
Fatal Frame 1 and 2 are amazing
Even better is White Day, which is getting a remake next month but I wouldn't have my hopes very high for it.
>>386108135
I really like the Penumbra series but I would say SOMA is more of a psychological thriller than it is a horror game. Still, it's one of my favorites.

Simon 2.0/3.0 are ancient legacy scans of a brain damaged man in the body of a dead woman.
I would have loved to see Dr. Munchies' legacy scan in a robot and been able to talk to him; I don't understand why they even had his scan in the computer if they didn't plan on using it.

Why, which part made you NOPE?
The first jump scare I got was when I clicked new game and the ghost rushed down the aisle at the screen while screaming.
The QTE where she smiles and comes walking towards you was also NOPE worthy.
I heard the game is super long, is this accurate?
>being older than 12
>unironically thinking jumpscares are a good form of horror
This is the best horror game to ever come out.
Reality is scarier than any game.
Wouldn't call this "scary" but holy shit the levels of pure fear and paranoia this fucker gives me makes it impossible to play.
>>386122548
There is no summary. It is what it is.
The only games that really spooked me is the Dead Space series. Not because of the jump scares, but the concept of the baddies.
Ancient fleshy creatures the size of the fucking moon drifting through the void, planting psychic signal transmitters that allow them to brainwash intelligent life into building psychic signal amplifiers that can also mutate necrotic flesh into creatures they control with the grand goal of consuming the living on a planetary scale to birth a new moon monster. These assholes are unfathomably ancient and there are a fuck ton of them. For each one, another planet full of life was devoured.
The spooky part though, is how the reason why Man has not encountered alien life other than the Necromorphs is because they already consumed them. For all we know in the games, Earth is the last planet with life in the fucking galaxy.
At least they had the balls to finally end the series after the DLC for 3. A bunch of the moons came and fucked Earth. And after all the biomatter is gathered, a new moon will form and drift through the void with the rest until they find another planet to eat.
